Yes it is an advent of religious teachings that advocate a life time with one partner. The cohesive family unit is the base of any healthy society. But these idea were around even before religion. It is the natural impetus of any culture that was not negatively influenced like for instance the Black Race.
Actually I don't think people are happy going from one love to the next. These values are being eroded by the media and advertisement of major corporations. We have been duped into thinking short term not long term which has destroyed the idea of marriage. The media also influences far more when you open your eyes to the facts.

Well, I met my most wonderful boyfriend at church when I was 11 years old. I am now 19 and we're going to get married!!
I know that I wouldn't be happier if we didn't get married and could be with "whomever".... the guy I am with is the most wonderful person I've ever known and I can't wait to get married and we can spend the rest of our lives together!!
And you still get to pick who you spend your life with in marriage.... just make sure you marry someone you love more than anything or anyone else and make sure they treat you like an angel and everything else and you will be happy!!

I believe marriage is actually a social idea. For a couple to be faithful to each other and have children is the ideal. There is nothing sadder than children that aren't wanted by either parent because that parent is busy having "fun" with a boyfriend or girlfriend. There is stability in a family life with both parents. This is not to say single parents are not good parents. They are but it is definitely more difficult for that single parent. I'm not sure that religion was the start but just socially, people figured out it is best for the children.

Marriage existed long before it became associated with Religion. It is a contract. A recognition of legalities.
Rulers would marry their daughters to other rulers of neighboring places to attaing peace treaty or pacts.
Humans are born superior to other animals. If you want yourself to be in equal to other animals [dogs, cats, pigs, horses, etc], then you can choose to be with whomever. That is a choice.

the best people to ask are those who have been "players" for 25 years and are in their late 40's. to me that doesn't look like the life that I want to live. And then theres the 50 year old with the 30 cats. not to mention all the single mothers (because not all of us are responsible). lets face human beings were created for REAL committed relationships. Not casual encounters. I weep for those who will never know what its like to have someone completely committed to loving you. its a joy that has no equal.

IMO it's both and their are pros and cons to either
You can be happy having friends but not getting married and having a life partner
or you can be happy with having one person for life.

Read the biography of Hugh Hefner. I think he's the perfect example for your question.
