something small and relatively inexpensive should be fine, since they'll likely have several showers for the bride in the future, so they'll get tons of stuff in the end. Candle holder, picture frames, a small cut glass vase, or anything along those lines should be great.

Presents are expected now in days, but are not mandatory. Showers are the gift-giving parties, engagement parties are only supposed to be to celebrate the occasion. Not everyone realizes this though, and sometimes they are thrown for the sole purpose of receiving a gift. I say no, since that's not the purpose, but you can't go wrong with a congratulatory card and/or bottle of wine/champagne, gift card, or baked goods.

Generally yes, a small congratulatory token is nice. Annoying... since you'll most likely get them a wedding gift as well.
Something small and thoughtful. I would send an elegant bouquet to be delivered the day before or morning of the party.

A nice bottle of wine and some flowers. Candles are good too. We had an engagement party and them bringing wine was awesome!

since you will no doubt also attend the bridal shower and also have to get a gift for the wedding itself, I would say a small token gift such as a bottle of wine is sufficient.

Yes! You do buy a gift for this. Get something off a registry if they have one or get them a gift certificate.

A bottle of nice champagne is very appropriate. Or one of those wedding planner books.
