I had a 2 yr old child and a puppy, wow, I didn't know what I was in for - Definately like having 2 toddlers!!

A very good approach advised by our trainer, not cruel at all to puppy... Take him outside every 2 hours or so. Stand there. Pay no attention, do not look at puppy, do not talk to puppy. "bore" them so they sniff around and go. The second they go, PRAISE! REWARD! EXCITEMENT! GOOD BOY!

It really worked for our Golden within a few days and I began to ween down when I went out w/ her from every time, to every other time to once in a while to reinforce the good.
So much better than getting upset and "rubbing their nose in it" which doesn't work, only instills fear.

PS. Combine with the Crate Training!!! I totally forgot about that! Use the crate when you are not home or at night.

Before you bring a puppy home, plan to take one or two weeks off of work, so you have uninterrupted time to focus on the puppy -- and, in particular, puppy potty training. Otherwise, it will take much longer to housebreak your pup.

Puppies learn new skills at different rates. It will take time for your puppy to develop a firm understanding of where it's acceptable to potty and where it is not. It will take time for your pup to consistently understand that all of the house is the den, an area not to be soiled

An easy way to help your puppy is to put them in a crate (a nice big one) at bed time. Get up early - before your kids, and pick up your puppy. Carry him right outside to the part of the lawn you want him to 'do his business' in, then wait. He will go naturally.

Give him a lot of praise, and bring him in and feed him his breakfast.

Then every two - three hours take him back outside. Make sure to praise him when he does the dirty!

:)
It really works.

The reason for the crate is that it keeps your puppy in bed until you decide it is morning. Once your pup is potty trained, you can decide if you still want to use a crate for bed.

We don't need one anymore, but our dog liked the security of her own place when our daughter was young.

BTW, be careful selecting a potty word if you are going to command train your dog to go to the bathroom,...

We got an adult dog from someone who was dying, and he had trained her to go to "hurry up", well, imagine having a three year old, that phrase comes up sometimes. Needless to say, it was a bit of a mess.

Hi take the puppy out every hour give him a command say be clean ,stay with him while he does it and praise him lots when he does it ,have you thought about crate training him?it is easier to toilet train as they dont like pooing in their bed ,it will take time my puppy is 5 months old and has learnt to go outside now at night put him in his crate and while you are up with the baby take him toilet ,i left my dog for 3 hours at a time at night and he very rarely done a toilet in his crate ,read up about crate training its basically a bed with a door so you know where they are when you cant watch them ,my puppy loves his lots of blankets to make it soft and his toys ,good luck just keep taking him outside ,to the same spot i did that and oliver will only dirty in the one spot which is good ,you will be fine but it wont happen over night xxxx

Whatever method you plan on using make sure you stick with it and don't deviate from it at all. Trust me it will pay off in the long run no matter how frustrating it can be.

One suggestion; at regular intervals though out the day take your dog to his or her "potty spot" and wait for him to go. Use a command like "get busy" as the dog does his business. He will associate that term and learn to go "on cue" eventually; with patients... Also reward your pup with treats after doing the right thing.

Like with humans, consistency is the key. make sure the things you do the puppy understands. He may be easier than you think. Positive Reinforcement is good to. He should know that what he is doing and where he does it is a good thing!!

You're already made the #1 mistake of getting a dog-getting a dog when you don't have time to commit. You should have waited until your son was older, before running off and getting a pup.
