Before AND after.

Use a LIGHT heat protective serum (like biosilk or john frida) to curl your hair. Then take a LIGHT finishing spray to set the curls. And then through out the day spray bits and peces.

You can go to sallys. They have cleaning solutions specificallyy made to clean up styling products from things like curling irons and flat irons. I believe its in a spary bottle and its a pink liquid. Use a SOFT terry cloth towel (specifically for this purpose) to clean them every once in a while or whenever they get alot of buildup.

If you're using a curling iron mousse is better because its for styling, where most hairspray is more for kind of gluing the hair in place after the styling is done. Thermasilk, however, makes a hair spritz for use with a curling iron. You spray the hair a section at a time as its put on the iron, and the Thermasilk is activated by the heat. This spray helps the hair hold the curl without "gluing" it (as regular hairspray can) to the point where the curl can't be combed out without pulling out the curl. If you're using some kind of non-heating curler or curling method mousse is still the best thing, although something that continues to work well (if you're going to leave the curlers in overnight and it has time to dry) is styling gel. Hairspray is good for when the curls are all out, and you go back and do an all-over spray to reinforce the curls (although too much hairspray can make combing through so difficult you'll pull out the curls trying to comb through it - so if you want curls without glue use only a tiny bit of hairspray). Most brands work ok. Pantene, Thermasilk, Dove - all good ones.

It's definitely good to use the heat defense spray before you curl, that's protecting your hair from a lot of damage. Most curling and straightening irons won't get gunked up by that kind of thing, but if you're worried about it, clean it when it's off with a simple wash towel and water. Usually you'll want to put on something like a heat defense spray before curling, and then a spray for better hold after it's curled, so the curl stays in longer. Just remember that you should give your hair a break every now and then, no products and no curling, so it stays healthy! :)

Both. Use a heat protecting/conditioning serum before then after, run through the shine stuff and hairspray for extra hold - but don't use too much of any of that stuff or else you'll end up with a greasy, unworkable mess.

Its a good thing that you use heat deffense spray but the most effective way for hairspry is to be used afteryou curl it, Hairspray dries fast and you dontwanna have some wierd curl and then have to brush the hairspray out and do it over, not a good idea

If your hair is really clean with no products, it can be hard to curl so use some mousse before it is dry, dry it, then use the iron. Hairspray should be used to set it at the end, but not much b/c you don't want it to be crispy!

your hair serum should be put on before curling your hair so that it wont burn or break from the heat. the hairspray should be put on after each curl is made... otherwise your curling iron will be ssttiicckkyy!!

It's easier to put in products before you curl you hair, but you have to curl it right after you apply the products. You don't want to do it after cuz you have to be more careful not to mess up the curls.

its best before so your hair has a protective layer on it before heating it up. Also, the product may help hold the curl.
