I would not say that scoliosis can be 'cured' but there are things that can be done to slow the progression though. I had done physical therapy exercises prior to my surgery, and for me, it did not help. And since I was 17 and a half, a back brace would not have helped in my situation. Basically, with a 58 degree curve, surgery was my only option. Without my surgery, my curve could have continued to progress, and possibly push on my organs, or put me in more pain than I already was in. You should talk to your doctor about your particular situation, and which option would be best for you including surgery, a back brace, physical therapy, or chiropractor.

No. I had gone to a chiropractor when I was little because it was thought better muscles would help my scoliosis. My mom ended up giving up on doctors for a long time, and by the time I went back at age 15, it was so severe I needed surgery. Braces and/or surgery are the only "curative" methods (though they do not make your spine totally straight..even surgery cannot do this). Depending on the curvature's severity and how much growth you have left (an x-ray of your hand- growth plate- will do this).

Email me if you have any questions.

Being a senior resident in rehabilitation medicine who is routinely seeing patients of Scoliosis , the honest answer is NO
Excercises may retard the progresion of the curve but will not cure it. Definitive answer lies in the surgery. Do visit the official website of 'scoliosis research Society" and you will see a welth of information there

Scoliosis can be cured/fixed/improved by a chiropractor. My spine was severely twisted and curved and in about a year's time with a very good chiropractor, I only have a slight curve now. Please don't do surgery yet!! Give a chiropractor a try first - it's better than having a surgery you may not need!

i dont think it can be completely cured, but the severity can be lessened. Lombardosis for example, which is when the lumbar, or lower back is curved in farther than it should be, can be corrected by strengthening the lower back muscles like the lower trapezius. The younger a person is diagnosed with a back curvature the easier it is to fix. The bones havent hardened as much and the use of braces or excersizes to strengthen the muscles that antagonize the curvature can help prevent or minimize curvature.

by antagonize i mean think of bicep/ tricep contractions--when one is contracted the other one is relaxed. When you build the strength up in your back, the muscle tone keeps the bones alligned correctly. As some people suggested, yoga strengthens many muscles, weight training can also help with assistance

Scoliosis can only be corrected when discovered in childhood, before you become an adult. Correction usually involves wearing a brace for a long period of time, or perhaps surgery. It can be improved by excercise, yoga is very good for that, but not completely cured.

Sadly no. The only way to totally get rid of scoliosis is through surgery, and even then it's iffy. Scoliosis sucks.

You key word, here, is "totally cure", and the answer of course is no. Your above respondents are correct.... depending upon just how bad the curve becomes, surgery is your only hope for "total" cure.
