I rent an apt in a not very classy building. Just moving in, the super replaced a deadbolt lock that was painted over and wouldnt work (ie, should've been done before, without my asking!) It took him about 15 min, and when he was leaving he sort of stalled and then asked me what I was paying per month....Weird, right?
Asking my friend who owns a apt in a much nicer neighborhood, she said I should tipped between $10-15! Another friend who owned said she just gave a nice chunk at Christmas or something...

Does the level of luxury within your building dictate how or if you tip??? Serious answers only, please!

You shouldn't have to tip for something like that, but I would make sure to give him something for a Christmas/end-of-the-year bonus. It doesn't have to be a lot, and it doesn't even have to be money. You could give him a generic Christmas card and some cookies, or something little. I suggest this because it is a good thing to have your super like you as a tenant! Like anyone, they are more pleasant to work with when they like you. If your pipes break at 3 a.m. or you lose water halfway through your shower, you want someone who will be there quickly and not be a pain in the neck about it.

No tip of any kind is required for supers. ever.

He is being paid to do his job - building maintenance - by management.

Your friends are wrong. They pay a maintenance fee if they own their apartments and if they have a janitor he/she benefits from the maintenance fees.

I owned a condo, no full time janitor there and I paid for services to people I contracted for anything I wanted done in my residence, painting, plumbing, repairs.

Everyone in the building paid a monthly maintenance fee for building maintenance, i.e., grounds, rubbish removal, etc.

Why should you tip him for doing his job? Isn't maintainance part of the deal when you rent, that's what you're paying for.

No one tips me to do my job.

Give him some money as Christmas along with the paperboy and mailman.

If you're going to tip, tip what you're able and not what's always expected. Not everyone has the extra money to tip as much as expected by the tipee.

You shouldn't tip the super. The super owns the building or entrusted by the owners, why should you pay them for fixing their own stuff?
