There are certain genetics tests that can be done on dogs to find out what specific breed they have in them. These tests cost tens of thousands of dollars, and it's VERY hard to find a veterinary clinic that will/has the ability to administer these tests. However, since you already know the dogs breed, that wont help you much. They also have "canine maternity" tests, which can help determine who the mother and father of the dog are.... but unless you have the mother and father to test, this doesn't help either. The only thing you can do is ask the place from which you adopted him. Maybe they have some sort of history in him or his parents.

No in my experience with my parents breeding Labs, you need their papers to tell their roots. Their papers contain a family tree and it will trace the dog back to it's great grand family.

In order to breed and sell the puppy as a purebred and make money off of them you need the papers. You would also need to papers to get the dog someone to breed with.

If it is just the family background of your puppy you want, Im sorry. You could ask wher eyou got the puppy from to give you the name of the previous owners, but they typically wont due to privacy laws.

No sorry. Not unless the shelter gave out the person they took the dog from or the person who gave him up. Most reputable breeders will refund the money if the buyer doesn't like the dog so your dog probably came from a backyard breeder or was a total complete accident from people not "fixing" their dogs.

So if breeding or showing was what you were planning to do....i'm sorry but your dog is completely worthless money or gene wise. You can however join sports with him.
