They said if I take defensive driving it won't go on my record. My question is, if I just pay the ticket and don't do defensive driving, will it go on my record even if my license is in another state?

Computers link everything to everything else these days. California will add a point to your driving record and your insurance company will surely become aware, and most likely raise your rates. If eligabile, traffic school is a good option. I am one to fight a ticket, but time off from work for court appearances means a wash even if you're found not guilty, you still lost wages

This is NOT 30 years ago; ALL states are electronically linked together. So, no matter which state you're in, when you commit the infraction/crime, it will be automatically recorded in the state of driver's license issue (in your case California).

Yes. Most states talk to each other and share records.

It may take a while, but it will eventually catch up to you.
