can you not go to the nearest ice rink and ask a few people if you can take pictures of them skating,im sure if you explained what you did now im sure they would be fine.good luck with your book,dont give up.x

I would either suggest you take the picture yourself, or draw a picture based on a photo that you find online.
Otherwise, it might be difficult to find any free images like that. If you go to istockphoto.com you can usually find images like that pretty cheap to use.
But if you are looking for free, you might also want to hit up college photography students, sometimes they need the experience as well as something to add to their portfolio. You never know, it might work.

if it won't be published why do you need to avoid copywright? Rex Features have a laibrary and they will send you hi-res versions of their catalogue which cost about £35 per picture. You don't have to pay them until you publish. so you can use the iamge and pay them if you are lucky enough to get it published.

you can search all the royalty free sections of the website no need to ask permissions from anyone as the site does all that for you. most pictures are pretty high resolution and can be blown to about a4 if you need too

Have you tried Google, then askinf the person hosting the image for information about the image, you'll find that many images are royalty-free, or at most, would require acknowledgement.

Try yahoo site Flickr. most of the pictures are public
and can be downloaded.
