Newly diagnosed with it, and it's making my life hell! I am nauseous 24/7 and all of a sudden can't eat anything, It all makes the nausea worse! There's cramping and I can't stand it. Could this be anything serious?

Like you said you are newly diagnosed with IBS, which is a very frustrating thing to deal with. You should discuss your concerns with your physician and if you don't feel your medicine or your doc's answers make you feel more comfortable, get a second opinion and ask what other things your symptoms could mean. Good luck!

IBS is serious. My question to you is - IBS or IBD (irritable bowel syndrome vs irritable bowel disease)? Are you suffering from constipation or diarrhea or both? Have you been put on any medications? Take gravol for the nausea - if it makes you sleepy don't take a whole one. There is medication for the cramping - talk to your Dr. Ginger tea also helps settle the stomach.

Your diet will run your life so as soon as you can get that sorted out the better. Eat yogurt - lots of it - it is your friend and will be for life - Activia is best. If you can't stomach yogurt and even if you can you should also take acidolpholus daily. It is the good bacteria that lives in your intestine & you will benefit greatly from it. Vitamin B12 is also very beneficial as is Vitamin D. You will probably have problems with keeping your iron up so watch that as well (it may upset your stomach so try the liquid "Flora" from the healthfood store -do not get the one with yeast in it.

You need to be very careful with the fiber that you ingest. Oat bran is best - so Cherrio's for cereal, oatmeal muffins etc. Hot oatmeal/porridige may cause you gas so you may or may not be able to eat it. Stay away from nuts - if you just have to have them you need to chew them down to paste before you swallow them. Stay away from yeasty foods - dried fruits, white bread including bagels and sugar. Sugar is now your enemy. Sugar feeds yeast & yeast destroys the good bacteria in your intestine (get where I'm going with this?). Drink as much water as you can and exercise as much as you can. The exercise is difficult at first because of the runs to the bathroom but it is necessary to keep the painful gas at bay.

There is a great book - Food & the Gut Reaction...it will help you alot.

All my best to you....

They're not sure how people get IBS, but you avoid it by staying away from spicy foods, caffeine, acids, etc. Treat it similar to how you would treat an ulcer.

I had it for a long time, finally a doctor prescribed a drug for me called Pamine. It's a smooth muscle cell relaxer and it helped right away. Ask your doctor for it.
