My puppies (5 months and 3 months) just got into a bag of unpopped popcorn (just the kernels). Help! Are they going to be ok? Should I take them to Vet?

If they develope signs of illness, such as vomiting, diarreah, fatigue, or stop eating their food or drinking water, take them to your vet.

Just one other take on this, from a dental point of view.

One of the number one causes for an 'unknown' toothache is a piece of popcorn kernal that slides its way between the tooth and the gum tissue, festers and becomes extremely painful. It can take several days to become painful so the patients rarely can point to the popcorn as the source of their pain, it isn't until the kernal or shell is removed that it dawns on them what happened.

This can happen to dogs as well. A dog cannot tell you he has a toothache, he can only whine miserably. We all know how we react to whining, at first, and it isn't really the most compassionate response.

If this happens to your dog he will have to have the same procedure done to him that a human would have done to their mouth, to have the offending matter removed. Only with dogs, this can be quite an ordeal and quite expensive.

If anyone's kids feed their family pet popcorn I believe the vet bill should come out of their allowance, since there would be no way anyone can really make up for the pain that an animal goes through.

Just a thought.

This is a form of coprophagia, when dogs eats non food dog food products- in this case popcorn kernals. This goes with another term you may or may not want to research "Pica". Pica is when your pooch eats potentially very dangerous non food items such as bark, rocks, furniture- you name it. The chemicals in some of these items (or just plain old rocks per say) can cause internal diorders, broken teeth and is just a bad habit. I didn't really dawn on me that letting your dog eat away at an old piece of furniture cause it was going to be thrown away eventually anyway was a serious matter as to the chemicals that could be involved. I know this went a little off topic though still a need to know being a dog owner. Hope that helped in some way...

The popcorn kernels will not hurt them...They should be fine. Just watch them to make sure they do not have any problems...If you see them act differently and they won't eat or drink water then you might want to give the vet a call to see what they recommend. But, they should be fine.

If it were a sock you would have something to worry about but popcorn kernels want hurt them.

It will probably cause them some discomfort if they ate a lot of them, but they should pass just fine. Don't be alarmed if they vomit or have loose stool (with kernels in it) for a few days. But if they are gagging and trying to vomit but nothing is coming up, or if it's just yellow-green bile coming up, OR If there is any blood in the stool or vomit, call your vet.

I have been thru this one...My kids use to the feed the dog popcorn....Our vet said that their are unable to digest the kernels and they will just go thru the system and out the end when they do their business. Its hard on their system and can cause them stomach cramps

Yes, I do, but I really like the half-popped ones. They're probably terrible on your teeth, though.
