I understand that thousands of years ago religion was the guide lines for life, religion was The Law. For good reason too, the church was a meeting place for the people, it was the Authority to ensure people were doing right by each other and was there to help people in need and most of all... Religions were created by US to explain the things we dont understand (look at the greek gods for example) Now in this age of enlightenment when we have Police and Welfare supporting the people. what do we need the strict guidelines for? Am i to believe that without a mythical being saying "no" that everyone would be overcome with the urge to start being amoral? start randomly killing people? I am not religious, u know what keeps me in line? when i do something mean i feel bad.. not because i'm scared of the "wrath of god" but because i know in my heart it's just not right. When will people wake up and believe in themselves again.

And i realize that we're in the 3rd milenium, didnt realize the typo till now.. thanks for pointing it out though. I want to mention.. this question was stated for those who follow blindly and dont know why.. maybe u will re evaluate whats important in your life : How many times you prayed in your life? or how many lives you have improved without expecting something (heaven) in return.

"When will people wake up and believe in themselves again."
I ask myself that very same question every time someone condemns another person for not being christian!
One of the greatest artists of the past 50 years has been John Lennon, and one of his greatest songs "Imagine" posed the thought:
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
Religion separates this world & causes so many problems. this would be a peaceful planet if everyone could move past this archaic practice of believing in mythological beings.

You have no idea what you are saying. It makes no sense. It is all a lot of words thrown together without substance.
Where did the 'feeling' of what's right or wrong come from so that you are made aware of your 'sin' and feel bad?
When did the US 'create' religions? What's this about the police and welfare? Are you nuts? "In this age of enlightenment", there should never be welfare; the police should be relaxing since enlightened folks would not be out hurting one another, causing them to have to speed down streets with blaring sirens 24/7.
Listen up! Amorality has been here since one day and it will be here long after you're gone.
Newsflash! The Church still functions as the centre where many go for assistance; during the winter months, that's where the homeless are put up and fed; that's where they get free clothing and linen, even furnishings.
Stop believing so much in yourself and start believing in God. You've got it all wrong!

It is good that you have feelings that are good and bad and that you are guided by this. I think this is true of most people in the world. There are some common things that most people just innately feel are right and wrong. I believe this comes from God and it is because we are his children. You are right you should not be doing things because your are scared of the 'wrath of God'. Can you imagine wanting our own children to do things because they fear our wrath? How long would that last? We want our children to do things out of love and because we want them to be happy and successful and yet we, being imperfect creatures, can realize that God wants the same for us. Religions help many people in many ways, if Police and welfare are all you have to rely on in a crisis or for guidelines on day to day living, than that is a poor source indeed. Millions around the world are uplifted, helped, improve their own lives, render service to others and even save their families because of belief in something greater than themselves, including God and religion.

First of all girl you scare me. Its the third millenium. Second. Why is it that you think people are any different NOW than they were 1000 years ago. That is a very snobbish superior like attitude. It MIGHT just be true that people have a built in space that is crying out for god. Some of the most intelligent people every in the world have believed there are perfectly good reasons, very good reasons even to believe in God.
Lady. Get a little humble and start reading some great books by great writers. Biographies especially. And learn some history.
And yes.... we have PROOF in the 20th century that abandoning God can lead to huge numbers of people dying.
Communism and Facism discarded belief in God and resulted in killing over 100 million people in the 20th century. This number is NOTHING.. ZIP in comparison to the numbers that were killed under religous rule.
Atheism KILLS.

I know what you mean, and I agree. Nothing cracks me up more than when catholics go to confession and then go out and f*** everyone over, it removes them of personal accountability becasue they say a few hail marys to make it all okay.
Not limited to catholics, it is universal, all is forgiven if you believe god will forgive you, to me that is not living in the real world........no one discovers god more than lifers in prison....too little, too late.....I think it is ignorant to expect that you will be forgiven no matter what,,,,,,by whom?.......Being a good person and trying your best to do so would make everyone better.......in the here and now, not for some after life which may or may not exist......the golden rule works for me....do unto others.....good question

It's as the saying goes, "damned if you do and damned if you don't." Religions, though imperfect in many ways "have" helped to civilize the human beast. Much from them are false but what isn't in a world that seeks out delusions to fill empty lives up with. If at least mankind is not as it once was as mankind does not makes slaves of each other as they once did. All else has "still" much work for CHANGE.

Actually we're living in the 3rd millennium. But people who live in their own little safety zone use religion as a means of keeping their lives stable. Come up with a system for structure that fills the gap of religion, and religion will go away.
I will ring your doorbell and run away!!!

Religion is for the weak of mind.
Your question and details were well thought up and typed out, I agree with you 100%, although I fear religion will be around for another 1000 years because there will always be those who need something else to believe in.

Hey me too! But I still believe in God. Hmm, never thought someone could be both self sufficent, moral, and independent on their own, without doing it because of God, yet still believe?

I do not attend church to "feel good about myself" I attend church because our FATHER requires us to do so. GOD c reated man and has given him instructions in a Holy Book called the BIBLE. That book is for our religious instruction and fopr learning how to live amongst others in this world. Please take some time to read, study, and obey our FATHER's BOOK while there is still time to do so. It will do you good. If I may be of service in any way please drop a note and I will answer it. Have a great day.
Thanks,
Eds
