Don't know My cat used to claw behind a fabric material sofa and I had to put sticky tape over the claw marks. Got rid of this old one and bought two new leather ones a 3 seater and a 2 seater. was worried about the cat especially if she disappeared behind the sofa. It seems that the different type of texture that leather has does not attract the cat in the same way as 9 months have gone by without any claw marks. Can't promise you the same though.

Cat's Tend Not To Like Leather Due To It Being Cold Sometimes... But If Your Cat Likes Leather And It Gets Up On The Couch It Will Definitely Claw It... Maybe Not Purposely But Still...

Possibly, but PLEASE don't de-claw your cat. It is so inhumane. De-clawing basically means amputating your cats toes...its incredibly painfull and leaves the cat with no means of protecting itself if it is attacked by a dog/fox, etc.

There are ways of getting the cat not to scratch your sofa. Use Lemongrass juice (in a spray bottle, its a strong, not unpleasent smelling plant), and spray it over your sofa, the cat doesn't like the smell, and should stay away. Or you could take orange peels and rub it on your sofa, they don't like the smell of citrus fruits. If you're able, every time the cat attempts to scratch the sofa, spray the cat with a spray bottle of water.
If that doesn't work, you can get these things called 'safe claws' off the internet. They are soft rubber sheaths that fit over your cats claws, so that they can't damage your home.
Ok, last idea, you can get a scratching post, and rub some good quality (stuff made from the leaves, not stalks and seeds) cat nip over it. That should attract the cat to the post, not your sofa.

Your cat will claw leather furniture whether intentional or not.
Instead of declawing which is considered INHUMANE and
illegal in a lot of countries try cutting with regular toenail clippers once a week or maybe a little more frequently while your cat is a kitten.
Although declawing will save your couch if your cat is allowed to jump on the couch he will probably use his back claws
to launch himself off...Which of course will leave holes anyway.
I have 5 cats and clip the front and back claws twice every week.
They may not like it but if you get them used to it at a young age it will be very helpful believe me.

Good Luck

Not if they are trained properly. When my cat was a kitten, he did claw our regular fabric sofas, but we trained him to stay away from the sofas and use the scratching post. He did. A few years later we got leather sofas, and he never even tried scratching them. I'm not sure whether or not he would have liked leather, but he was trained not to scratch the furniture so he didn't.

Just make sure they have a scratching post available and make sure they are trained before you get your new sofa. Anytime they try to scratch your current sofa, scold them and bring them over to the scratching post. The cat will get the point. A spray bottle also works as a harmless but annoying and effective way of punishing the cat if he or she ever tries to scratch the furniture.

No! I have 2 cats and leather sofas, and they do not claw them. You just have to train it. Buy a "stay off spray" and spray it on the sofas(it will not damage sofas). Also keep a spray gun of water ready at all times to spray your cat if they look like they will scratch. If you yell a loud sharp STOP at your cat then they will learn. In my case it worked.

Hope this helps!

Probably, especially if its an indoor cat with no other out let. However if you get your cat a scratching post and rub it with cat nip before your cat ever gets to it, that should help draw it to the post.Between that and spraying your cat with water if it starts to claw at your couch that should be enough to convince kitty that the couch is not a good scratching post. Also I noticed other people spoke about declawing your cat, don't do this cats claws are part of their skeletal structure and if the claws are removed when walking your cats feet start to deteriorate causing it pain later in life.

Not all cats claw furniture directly, but if she gets up on it her claws will make marks!

BUT - please do NOT have your cat de-clawed! (if you were thinking of it). Never have your cat put under anaethetic unless medically necessary. Best thing to do is not allow her in the room with the leather sofas, and get her a scratch post. Cats can be 'trained' not to claw certain things - i.e taking her to her scratch post when she tries, with a sharp NO.

Yes your cat will claw all the leather sofas in your neighbourhood, and possibly further affield.

Yes they will. We had this discussion before we got out sofas as I have always wanted a leather sofa. We did look into declawing the cats but realised it was so barbaric, cruel and tramatic we decided not to go for leather
Please do not get your cat(s) declawed.
