According to the book of Job, it's probably because God is insecure.
Actually, the whole Old Testament is filled with tales of a petty god that demands worship from us mere mortals, whether he is deserving of such praise or not. God even comes out and says that he is a jealous god. The first commandment pretty much nails that one.
But I think the book of Job illustrates God's insecurity rather beautifully. Not only does God insist that people worship him, but he is actually goaded by Satan. Satan challenges God's authority and Job's motives. This proves too much for God, who allows Satan to torment Job...on a dare.
The New Testament helps to fix this, but it doesn't really cover up that God is so insecure in his role as divine creator that he resorts to threats to ensure loyalty. Not too unlike a Mafia boss, really.
...or, an abusive husband.
Edit: To those who say that God doesn't force you to follow him, that is exactly what exortion is: forcing you do something. Threatening to send someone to Hell is extortion on a spiritual level. It is indeed coercion. You can choose to not follow, sure. You can also choose to not hand over your purse and be shot by the mugger. Not much of a choice, is it?

The idea of a single all powerful God is an amazing idea in and of itself. That is why monotheism has spread all over the globe. If you can appreciate the honoring it takes to honor each and every person, place, time and situation, you can appreciate how busy the ministers of pantheism must have been before the idea of a single God took hold.
What a single God accomplishes is the right to honor all the important things of life by honoring one symbol. It saves lots of time so humans can have wars and spent money, energy, children and time in general to create the world we live in.
As for being a bull in a china cabinet, our concept of a single god is the bull in the corner of the room. Why do we spend so much time protecting our notions of God and life when our notions have been so dam poor. Just look around at what we really honor. Cars, sex, comfortable coffins and coffee. (Scratch the coffee, who can live without good coffee)

Because he is a god silly. If you were a god you would say the same thing. And he does not force you that is your choice. You need to go back and read the bible or any other book in relation to china shops and god.

God doesn't force you to worship Him. He could, but what kind of heart felt worship would that be. I also believe many misinterpret the "jealous" God reference. If you truly believe in God, why would you worship any other "God". Referring to God as being jealous is just a way of stating the obvious fact that their is only one God.

Why you ask? Is God making you worship God? If not then how can you say ,God is making others worship him, and not other Gods. Do you, worship a God?
Or do you not worship any God?
If you are not worshipping a God or Gods. Or if you don't even worship one.
Then why does bother you so?
If it doesn't matter to you. Then why should you care ,if God does or not?

I personally believe that the biblical god is a made up fantasy to keep people in line, so chaos won't exist.

i understand whatcha recommend approximately taking that bounce of religion from a place of actuality into the area of fable - you recognize there is not any longer something there yet hundreds of thousands of human beings inform you that 'they understand' that there is. could fairly some those human beings be insane? properly, definite ... and that they are. I searched in Vietnam in the process the conflict - undesirable, ravenous, traumatised, extensive-eyed babies. Mmm. no longer lots information of a god there. I searched in non violent oz. - lotsa human beings ‘walking with god’ yet they did no longer look luckier or unluckier than me ... in actuality I observed MYself as lots extra appropriate off cos I wasn’t donning the burden of guilt and concern of hell in my 'after' existence. I searched in the present day and sober for ten years; I searched under the effects of concepts-changing components for thirty years. there have been circumstances i presumed i became 'god' yet by no ability got here upon a foot-print in lifelike information everywhere. My open-minded seek stopped approximately 5 years in the past by way of fact attempt as i'd I wasn't waiting to enable bypass of actuality. i'm beneficial there are a number of that've had a actuality that wasn't too astonishing and have not neglected finding out to purchase and merchandising it in on a fable - the fable heavily isn't for me. in recent times I purely element and snigger on the delusional fools who're confident i'm mad. God never "forces" anyone to do anything. He simply gives them choices. He trys to compel and offer strong urging for people to worrship Him... by offering them information, by persuasion. But He never forces anyone.
Just be prepared for the consequences of your own decisions.

God is divine, in my opinion. He would not have a human flaw like jealousy. Therefore, it is obvious that God is not that monster portrayed in the bible.
