Religion is important to a Christian because we believe that our existance on Earth is like comparing a grain of sand to the entire galaxy. If Christians are right, and you have to make the choice here on Earth before you die someday, I think that makes it very important. I think it is the most important thing you need to do while you are alive.
Religion has become some kind of a dirty word among society today. The fact is that I don't consier myself "Religious" because I don't see my faith as believing in a set of rules outlined in the Bible. I believe that the rules were given to show us that everything is not okay without God. We all sin and fall short of the standard. If you conisder that Christianity might be true, and believe me there are thousands of proofs that the Bible is accurate, it is worth looking in to.
Consider this: If you were about to get onto a plane and the pilot said that there is a 1 in 10 chance that the plane would crash but they didn't know for sure, would you get on the plane? I think it is important even to athiests that continue to ask questions on this site because it makes a big difference in who is right and who is wrong. It's not like arguing that blue is prettier than green. It is arguing that the rest of eternity is nothing or everything.
God said that if you seek Him, you will find Him..I would encourage you to test that. Investigate facts and arguements for both sides and make the most rational decision that you can. If you truely seek God and don't find Him...then I am wrong and you can feel okay with being an athiest. But don't sit on the fence and claim to be agnostic...you need to find out one way or the other.

Everyone needs something to believe in, and also, you have to believe that there is more to life than just this world, there is Heaven and Hell and if you want to waste this life on earth by doing the wrong thing than you can, but if you want eternal happiness in Heaven then you have to follow the Ten Commandments of God and do what is right with your life...

Religion in and of itself is not important. Faith and belief are the important components.
We make a big deal out of our beliefs because we find all good things in it. We have an urge and need to share it with ohters so they can have the same joy we feel.

Religion is not important to everyone, but as a whole religion gives life meaning to people. It gives them a purpose in their lives to attain that one goal.... Going to heaven.... or more accurately NOT going to hell...... Religion helps people grieve the loss of loved ones.... it gives them a belief system to guide their lives. Without it they would not know what to do with their lives.
It's nice to believe that there is an all-powerful being who will let you live in heaven if you just blindly have faith that he exists.

Because they are scared.
Some are scared of having to find their own meaning in life. Some are scared or what their friends and neighbors will think of them. And some are scared because they believe they will be condemned for all eternity if they make a mistake.

Eternity is more important than anything in any ones life. That is what makes belief in Christ and God extremely important.
Religion, per se, is Not important to me. My soul is.
