There are a lot of reasons you might be sleepy.

Poor diet, lack of physical fitness could be it. Try taking a multivitamin and eating healthy.

You might be sleeping poorly. Some people do not enter solid deep sleep, and so no matter how long they sleep for, they often wake up feeling sleepy still. Some people toss and turn, and wake up throughout the night, even if they do not remember it. If you toss and turn at all, you're probably not sleeping that well. People who sleep well usually don't move much at all during the night. Try taking some Melotonin (Can be found over the counter in your basic Vitamin aisle) before bed for a few weeks. See if this helps you get better sleep.

It could be your attitude. If you have a lack of energy throughout the day in general, stress, anxiety, and depression will add to the feeling of sluggishness. If you're feeling the symptoms of any of these things, you will need to treat that disorder. If you're not feeling depressed, or under a lot of stress, don't worry too much about it.

If this is something recent, then look at all of the things that have changed recently in your life that might be leading to it. If it's something ongoing, or that you've been experiencing for months or years, there is a bigger problem and you need to start investigating it.

Sleeping too long will make you drowsy the next day. For most people ideal sleep is actually about 6-7 hours. If you're sleeping a "good" 8 or more hours a night, you might simply be sleeping too much. Try sleeping a little less and see if you have more energy.

Also, look at the way you're approaching your mornings. If you get up and drag yourself to work, or sit around all day, naturally you're going to be sleepy. Add some accomplishment to your mornings. Accomplishment brings energy. Seriuosly. If you finish a vigorous workout at the gym, you're more likely to do something valueable with your time after the gym. If you sit around all day watching TV, chances are you won't even have the energy to take out the trash. Think about it. Accomplishment brings energy. Procrastination brings a lack of energy.

Get up, shower, eat a decent breakfast, maybe do a little excercise. See if this boosts your energy throughout the day.

Lay off the caffiene and energy drinks. While giving you a short term boost, these will drain you of energy over time, and your body will develop a dependancy on them. Meaning you will need them to stay awake.

Lastly....back to depression. You go to bed around 12-1. You get up at 11:30. You're sleeping a lot. If you're having trouble getting to sleep earlier, and sleeping so long, I would take a wild guess that you are somewhat depressed. That's a classic sign. Sleeping so much wastes away the day. if you're waking up and "not doing much", you're just perpetuating a cycle of sleeping too long, accomplishing too little, and remaining depressed. If you're staying up late it's likely because you're trying to compensate for what you "didn't" do during the day, and all in all, it's just making the cycle worse.

If that applies to you, you need to break out of your cycle of procrastination, oversleeping, and end the depression (Even if it's only a minor one, because it will grow).

Simple advice. Plan your days. Stick to your plan. Do more. Sleep less. In time, you will feel better, and gain more energy. Add some new tasks to your day, like working out, even if only for 20 minutes. Go for a walk in the early morning. Do something in the morning that you would normally save for the evening.

Hope this helps in some way or another!

Oh yeah, if you are sleeping poorly, and you simply cannot solve the problem, visit a doctor. Ambien and Lunesta are good for getting you back into a normal pattern of sleep, and giving you more energy the next day. They're not miracle drugs by any means, but those combined with some advice from your doctor, may get you started on the right track.

You might be anemic. Consider going to the doctor and having a general checkup and CBC just to be on the safe side. If it is anemia, you can take some iron pills that will help get better and feel less tired--if you can stomach them. Sadly I can't.

You are probably getting too much sleep. Try just getting 8 hours and go from there.
