1) Does he have a favorite blanket or animal? Make sure that does with him.

2) Have his routine set in stone; make sure whomever is watching him follows his routine.

3) Maybe a little booklet of the likes and dislikes of your child. Does he like to read books before bed? Does he loves his afternoon walks? When are his naps? What should they do when he wakes up crying?

4) Don't leave right now. Spend about 1+ hour with him in this new environment. That way he won't feel as much seperation anxiety.

Send "known" items: a blankie, a cuddly teddy or animal, etc

Something that smells like you

Call him at bedtime and sing a bedtime song, if possible...and tell him "mommy'' or "daddy" see you real soon

Let whoever's keeping him know his schedule so it will be somewhat familiar to him

Tell him you love him very much

My sister and cousin both (along with their spouses) did this when I kept their little ones (first time away from home for all 3)

If he is going to be with someone he knows and you trust...He will be fine. He might cry a little when you leave him so it would be a better idea for the person to pick him up from you.
He will think that he is going on a adventure and may react differently.

Give him a teddy bear to take with him. Also give him reasurance but don't keep going on becuase he will see you are worried and may begin to worry himself which is not what you want. Depends who he is going with but you should give them something he assosiates with you like his favourite reading book and see if his routine isn't disturbed. It kind of depends where is going and who he will be with.

make sure he has everything in every eventuality - comforters, fav toys, extra clothes, spray a little of your perfume on a blanket for him to hold and remind him of you

make sure whoever is looking after him knows everything about his routine, how to settle him etc.. and that if he doesnt settle then to contact you to collect him - no point upsetting him for no reason
