If you like the light, go for a glass block that can be mortared into place. You get light and privacy without the moisture problems of a traditional window. Be sure to seal the grout though, it will mildew otherwise.

I saw on a DIY show where they had the same problem, their solution was to use glass block to allow the natural light in and cut down on the visibility since glass block comes in various patterns.... another episode they closed off the wall and used glass block vents (like dryer vents) along the top of the wall to allow light in.

Seriously though, remove it, and frame it out enough to drywall. Then tile over the drywall. You may have to tile that whole shower wall to make it look good.

Have you thought about replacing it with glass blocks? You can not see through them, but they let in some nice light.

I think those glass blocks that look like giant ice cubes would look nice, or maybe stained glass.

You can put in obscured glass, thats still lets light through, but can't be seen through . or paint it for a quick temporary fix.
