Babies go through a stage called "stranger anxiety." They dont like being around people they dont know. It usually happens around the same time as "separation anxiety" where they dont want mom to be out of their sight for even a second. Your son will grow out of it. Just dont try to force him to accept strangers.

A stranger to you or to the baby? If you arent aquainted with the person maybe you should not allow those you don`t know to give your baby affection, if you do know them, I don`t think I would worry to much about this, as the child will adjust on it`s own as time passes, just give him/her lots of love, and be sure the baby sees you there while others are there, that will build the trust your baby will have for you, soon will begin to understand that you will always be there to look after him/her.

My advise to you is don't let some stranger give your child affection. Your child is crying because he is uncomfortable with a stranger wouldn't you be if some stranger wanted to give you a hug or a kiss.

A stranger should not be giving your child affection in the first place.

If you're talking about someone you know that the child is not familiar with, like an aunt or extended fmaily member, what he's doing is normal. It's separation or stranger anxiety. he'll grow out of it.

In this day and age why on earth would you want to teach your child that strangers can come up and touch them? NOOOOOOOOOOOO. I prefer my children to kick and scream when approached like that by a stranger! Strangers should know better than to even approach a child! When people do this to my children I tell them in no uncertain terms that my children do not like strangers and I like it that way. Most understand.

I'm assuming by stranger, you mean someone you know but that your baby does not, right?

Our pediatrician suggested that when we are talking to someone that we hold our baby with her back against our chest, so that she is facing out. That way she still has the sucurity of your arms and your presence, but she gets used to seeing other faces also. We have been doing this since she was about 6 monnths old, and it seems to have worked - she is 11 months old now, and only cries when people that she doesn't know want to hold her, but she is fine interacting with them while we are holding her... she will even smile and reach out and "talk" to them...

Ask people your baby is unsure of not too get close to start with , after 10 mins or so your baby should settle and start to relax a bit. It helps if the baby has a chance to check them out and not have some one in their face - if you know what i mean!!!
