Hypothyroidism is very common in my family. I went to the doctor to get tested, but results won't be in for another week. Over the last year I have had significant weight gain. Will proper thyroid medication assist me in losing some of these pounds? Or am I stuck with them? Diet and exercise have had very little effect on my weight over the last year. Help!

If your thyroid is underactive, the meds will help some. The meds will help with proper diet. I have hypothyroidisn. It is very difficult to lose weight. You also need to be on a proper diet if you have the disease as it's best friend is diabetes. Hypothyroidism is an audioimune disease which means you may be at risk for other complications as well. Take care of yourself!

I do not personally have hypothyroidism, but both my niece and my daughter have it. My niece had it for quite some time before it was diagnosed and had gained a significant amount of weight. Since her diagnosis, she has managed to lose a little of the weight, but it's not easy. My daughter, on the other hand, was recently diagnosed during routine blood work and had only gained a little bit over the past couple of months. The medication has helped her to not gain any more. I would think that if your test comes back positive, you get on medication to control it, watch your diet and exercise, you should be able to lose at lease some of the weight.

The thyroid meds usually do not help with weight loss. They will however stop the weight gain and allow you to lose weight with diet and exercise. The more important hings about this is to always test in the morning for a true reading and if you get put on a T4 med you want the morning TSH to be around 1.0. If you get put on a T4/T3 med, you'd want the FT4 and FT4 to be high in range.
