If you care for someone as deeply as it seems you did then there is nothing you can do but give it time. The heart just needs some time to get used to them not being around anymore and the head needs some time to process the feelings of rejection.
It has taken me almost a year to get over my ex-wife and she has made my life hell the entire time. If this person treated you nice then it may take longer.
Do yourself a favor and think hard before you date someone else. Rebound relationships never work and sometimes end up making the damage worse.

first of all if you really love this person, your feelings are not going to ever go away forever. because if you stop seeing this person for 6 months and run into him on the street. your heart will still flutter at the sound of his voice (whatever happens when that person is around). I actually doubt that you want to stop loving him. you probably want to stop needing or craving him.
Anyways here is some tips on getting over him. the best thing to do is make a clean break, give yourself some time to grieve, and move on in your life. try to fill your time up with some new distraction: another lover, work, hobbies, etc. (this will keep you from thinking of him); talk about something ese (It's okay to do a little venting, but spare your inner circle from an endless tirade for months at a time.)
good luck.

Its a very hard process! In fact I am going through the same thing! Me and my ex- boyfriend of alomst 3 years are finally moving on. Its been awhile since we broke up but this is my method. 1st) Considering that it takes 21 days to make a habit and like 40 something to break it! Look at getting over him as Making a Habit! Tell yourself that you dont like him everyday. 2nd) If you talk to him...dont allow yourself to flirt with him and if he does with you...dont do it back. Change the subject. Honestlly it will be hard. But you'll be better off. You might always feel so feelings for him, but your 1st love will always be special to you. 3rd) Try talking to other guys. Even if you have no feelings for them the way that you do him, at lest your mind wont be thinking of him! Keep yourself busy and try hanging out with your friends more often. Dont allow yourself to be alone b/c if you are then you'll be tempted to call him! Most importantly...Be Strong! Dont give up! Have hope! Eventually your feelings will start to fade!

yeah, it is really difficult...I think if it was real love, you will never stop loving him and you will always have smtg special for that person...Just time can decide and in time...There are people when they broke up with smb they loved, they never ricovered...but only time can help here !
Just try meeting new people, do things you really like, listen to the music....hang out with your friends and discover new things!Goog luck!

Give youreself time. I'm going through a break up too and I'm just keeping busy. Keep you're mind off him and take out everything in you're sight that reminds you of him. Especially at you're place.

you really cant. it takes time, i know you feel. just go out with your friends-get your mind off of things. party, have fun. it really helps. talk to one of your really close friends about just little things while youre hanging out-you can cry, tell her/him exaclty how you feel; just get it off your chest. think of all the things he has ever done, ever said. think of some reasons why he makes you mad and just say screw it. just HAVE FUN!! if anything is meant to be it will-thats what always keeps my head up. go out and find a new lover!!

You have to be pretty dead on the inside to stop loving someone, most humans are incapable of stopping their emotions.

Stop talking about him.
Stop being around him.
Just stop everything that has to do with him.
It's not easy, but eventually...anyone can get over anything.
