I'm in the process of growing my hair and it has been a struggle. I've done tons of research on hair and I found some striking things. First off you need to understand hair and what it's made of. The outer layer of your hair is made of cuticle which is highly sensitive to heating products, relaxers, and coloring. These things make hair thin and weak and ultimately leads to breakage and loss of hair. "BLACK" hair type 4a and 4b have the most curl pattern to their hair. It makes it hard for the natural oil in your hair to moisten each folicle. Moisture is key for those of us with this type of hair. Also you need to cut all split ends unless you want them to get worse and lose hair. Hair is made of protiens so eat a diet rich in protien and use products with protien in it. It promotes strong hair. It's ok to wash your hair weekly or biweekly. however once a month do a deep conditioning wrap your hair in a silk scarf every night to prevent breakage and when using heat products use a protectant. hair is a lot of work but if you are patient your hair will grow within your own gentic range. Hair is only programed to grow about 6inches a year so 1/2 inch per month. So be patient and maybe you'll achieve the longest hair you've only dreamed to imagine.

It depends what kind of hair do you have but you have to take care of your scalp keep it moisturized and clean 'so get a wash every two weeks use a good moisturizer or Dr miracle really works miracle lol
If you want to get braids or weaves or cornrows same rules apply take care of your own hair under the extensions by washing it and keep your scalp moisturized and sometimes wear your natural hair out so your hair can breath it's a Caribbean thing my mom always said that lol
I think since the natural look is in go natural keep your ends trimmed and blow dry and use a ceramic iron when you want the straight look that way you don't put that much chemicals and heat in you hair
Well good luck if i knew your particular hair type i would of been more helpful but i hope i was somewhat helpful
lol

don't worry, black hair grows just like everyone else, just keep it in good condition, moisturizer is important, stay away from really oily stuff.
