Are these invisible mortals alive or deceased? Ghosts are people who are in limbo between our mortal world and the spirit world. They have either died violently; too soon or had unfinished business in life (suicides). Most of the time they do not realise they're dead or do not want to accept the fact. They watch their friends and loved ones go about their daily lives and even become angry & jealous not understanding WHY they're not able to do the same any longer.
Spirits have crossed over. They are okay with this fact and have found peace within themselves and on this other plane of consciousness.

Invisible mortals are just as likely but invisibility is difficult in theory, much less in practice.
I'd go for higher dimensional beings if you are looking for a more realistic and theoretically possible entity. But, given the ghostly sightings that have been researched, natural phenomena no associated with any entities seem to be the actual explanation.

Well if you see your dead mother in front of you, you can safely assume she is a ghost and not an invisible mortal. Your reading too many graphic novels, aren't you?

Most intelligent, thoughtful people do NOT assume there are ghosts. But yes, since ghosts assumes all kinds of supernatural stuff and an afterlife etc., an invisible mortal is much more likely. But it's still all bogus, silly and requires more credulity than sense.

I've never seen a ghost, but I'm not denying the possibility that there could be ghosts. However, I'm not as sure I believe in people who are still alive and have the ability to be invisible. You must be a fan of the show Heroes?! :)

Sometimes I think they want something to keep them company or blame stuff on. I read of a lady who claims ghosts keep misplacing her keys. I could claim ghosts who shut off my alarm clock in the morning.
I dont believe that ghosts are the sheet-covered ex-people that they are made out to be in the popular culture, but there is something out there which defies materialistic explanation. There are many theories, such as twists in the time continuum which allow shadows of past or even future events to be seen, emotional residues where something catastrophic happened, or even some kind of other-worldly or demonic deception going on. I think a lot of it is pure imagination or something physical going on. In one case of a "haunted house" the "ghost" turned out to be a bottle stuck in a knothole in the attic where the wind blew across the open top of it and created a moaning noise.
If I ever see a ghost, I will have to ask it what it is. BOOOOOOOOO!

Ghost & spirits are the same thing. Jesus said there are ghosts.
When He was walking on water He told those afraid He wasn't a Ghost. When He raised from the dead, He told Thomas He wasn't a Ghost.
But there were satan or demons/ devils (spirits) possessing or oppressing people in the Bible. Jesus healed many people possessed or oppressed of the devil or demons. They are spirits/ ghosts.
Souls/spirits don't die. The persons soul/ spirit go where God puts them when their physical body dies & is buried.
The soul who gets thrown into the lake of fire is the second death. (After Great White Throne Judgment.) And hell fire (where some souls go when they die) is a type of death of soul also.

I see a lot of Christians who believe in ghosts, and it seems like this to me: If god is so specific about the afterlife, down to everyone being asleep until judgement day, wouldn't the existence of ghosts point to a lack of organization on God's part?

I think it's a logical follow-on from a desire to believe that death is not final, and that something else will happen after we die. Though I have met people who SWEAR they have seen ghosts, and nothing I say or do can sway them from this belief.
