am trying to a find a nice apartment with low rent for me and my 9month old daughter. Its really important to me that they are safe and i had a crime report sent to me on a particular apartment (Towne Oaks in North Richland Hills Texas) and dont know if the amount of incidents are average or high.

I would hate to sign a lease and get stuck somewhere miserable.

How much incidents/reports is normal for a safe apartment complex? 1 p/month? 3? 5? 10? 20?

whilst can not totally give you a reply on the amount of incidents would then become high what I think might be of help is for you to drive around there at several different times of day / night and days.........and just have a good look are people walking around with their children, or are there hoards of kids running wild and men always sitting around drinking beer etc [not a bad thing but you DONT want to have to walk past them every time you enter your apartment]

Also if there is a park / play area maybe pull up and get out and chat to the mums with their children.....often they will tell you the truth.

Also before moving to ANY place do a sex offender search on that area, that also will give you some peace of mind as what your neighbours might be like...........for instance here in fl. there is one apt. complex that has maybe 25 offenders living there so I sure as heck do NOT want to be any place close to them.

Regards

It all depends on the number of occupants. Ex. 3 reports a month in a complex with 1200 people doesnt sound too scary.... but 3 reports for a complex with maybe 450 people would be a higher percentage. In apartments you run the risk of living with all types of people good and bad. Honestly you can get an idea by the way the complex is kept up and looking around at the people who live there. This sounds like it must be your first apartment so I understand why you would worry. Low cost of rent normally means less desireable people but a good operating complex can have a handle on crime and get those people out. Ask how many police officers live on the premises... they normally get discounts to live in apts so I am sure thare are some.

(100 units is not huge by the way)

What you should be looking at is not the number of calls but what kind of calls. If there are a bunch for burglaries, thefts, family disturbances, weapons disturbances or loud music and parties then I would look elsewhere. If it is things like keys locked in vehicle, alarms, or information reports then I'd consider it to be a safer complex. Having cops around is a good thing it just depends why they are there.

depends upon the SIZE of the complex. If it is huge (like over 100 units), then 5-10 would be considered normal. If it's small (10 units or less), then 5-10 would be a significant problem.

Without knowing where your at or how big your apt complex is we can't answer that. If your in a good area calls that matter to you will be lower compared to a similar sized complex in a bad part of town.

Also, it depends on the type of call, not just how many.
