My ? is I dont think I am getting enough protein due to I eat through a special straw. I eat meat broth but have to strain it well so it doesnt get stuck in my teeth. Can anyone suggest a good shake or natural food so I consume enough protein so my muscles dont start disappearing. my doctor told me to blend the meat in the soup and dont strain it but that beomes a mess with my braces.

Well....You can definitely get either a protein supplement or an amino acid preparation in a liquid form....

I would suggest a plain protein supplement instead of an amino acid preparation.

Here is what I use for my training but I think it would be sufficient for you if you take the minimum recommended amount:

Active-Whey™ Undenatured, Bioactive Whey Protein Isolate

Another thing that is equally important for maintaining your body muscle mass is to continue engagement in some form of exercise....whatever does not interfere with your surgery (for example power walking is safe)...

I have been taking care of patients with their mouth wired shut after jaw surgery and I know that this is quite a challenge....Keep it up!!!

I am going to give you some ideas. Please don't roll your eyes at me. LOL! When my daughter had this surgery we had to come up with fun stuff for her to eat.

I bought baby food oatmeal (the kind you mix up) I mixed this with all sorts of interesting things to keep her interested. I actually used the vanilla ensure drinks instead of milk, added a bit of butter and it tasted very good.

She had these little bags called zip-n-squeeze that were small bags with a zip lock top and a soft plastic straw that she could slide along side her jaw and then squeeze the bag with her hands and the food would go into her mouth and she could just swallow. These were the best investment we ever got.

You can add some heavy cream to your protein drinks to keep the calories up and this is one time you don't have to worry about your weight and it tastes great!

You will need to be creative. Have you visited the orthognathic websites on yahoo? Also you can write to me directly and I will write you back.

My mom had jaw surgery three times, so I know how hard it is too eat! I hope you feel better soon!
Anyway, she used to drink a lot of "Ensure" shakes and I know that "Atkins" makes good protein shakes as well. Slim fast makes a shake that is on the "optima" plan. it has a lot more protien so you don't get hungry as quickly. Even though you are not trying to loose weight, that might be a good option as well.
I hope this helped!

You should try Kellog's Special K2O. It's protein water. Tastes pretty good too.
