Bake the cake batter in steel bowls.
This will give you the round shape. You can cut a little off the bottom round to make it stable on the platter.
Ice with buttercream and do the stitching in red licorice.

They make a special mold for round cakes, often with an insert so you can have a layered effect like the center of the earth. If you cant find it (i have only seen it on tv) make 3 circular cakes and stack them and carve freehand, would be my only advice. As long as you frost it well, it need not be perfect.

make the recipe as directed and instead of using a round or oblong cake pan, bake the mix in a bowl. i am not sure how long to bake it since i have never made one but just keep checking it. once its done, turn the bowl over and you will have a dome shaped cake or you can buy a pan from your local craft store. good luck

If you want just a 'half' baseball, use a pyrex bowl that is safe to put in the oven and bake until done. If you really want a complete 'ball' just two smaller pyrex bowls and using bamboo skewers or tooth picks and icing, holding the two sides together while you frost the complete ball with your white and red icing or even using string licorice for your stitch marks. Have fun!

If you don't want to buy molds, then use two steel bowls, baking half in each bowl. Join the two halfs with some icing, letting it serve as somewhat of an adhesive. Once you ice/frost the entire thing and let it chill in the fridge, you'll have a good, solid ball that is securely joined.
