Military vet has it right. I'll elaborate a bit by saying the idea was to stress muscles without motion. I recall doing isometric routines some 45 years ago, but haven't heard much about it since.

It did seem to work reasonably well as a strength workout. I suppose I'd still use it if I didn't have access to free weights and machines.

This is what guys who are military prisoners do, to keep toned up when there is not a lot of room to maneuver in a cage, and such, or shackled.

Isometrics is using your body to do exercise by using it's own properties.

Standing back to a wall, palms back, pressing against the wall, using your own weight as the weight.

Pushing your palms together in front of you as hard as you can, using muscles of left and right arms against each other.

If you have a chained up leg, push against the extended chain from inside the cuff, building up your leg muscles.

This keeps you at least somewhat in shape, in case you get a chance at escape.

At least, that's one use of it.

I have never heard of isometrics. Sounds interesting though.
