My son did EXACTLY the same thing until he was nearly 2 years old. They will grow out of it, it's just hard on the parents to have to get up all the time. "Happy Sleep Habits Happy Child" has been a HUGE help to me in giving me advice for dealing with my son's sleep issues.

He's awfully young but I don't like the sound of what you've described at all. Have you thought to have his blood sugar checked at 3 am...If he's waking to drink milk (his mouth should be rinsed out, milk sugar will destroy his teeth while he sleeps) it just seems that somethings wrong. And 2 naps during the day is giving me an ALERT as well. Maybe he's allergic to milk? Ask your doctor, okay.. you might even consider changing the milk to goat's milk, it's better because it has less sugar. Sugar is really bad for everyone and it seems to be having an adverse affect on your little one. Sugar is the most destructive part of the American diet. Food companies are actually engineering our food (processed food like an oero cookie) to be ADDICTIVE. You can read about this for yourself. Also the sugar in the bag on the grocery shelf---bleached. Splenda--also a chlorinated product. Any local health food store should have a book section where you can read about this kind of information.
If you don't like what your doctor has to say look up A
CERTIFIED NUTRITION THERAPIST they can help you even more.
You might try to give your baby this milk just before he goes to bed and see if he still wakes at 3 am just be sure to rinse his mouth out whether it's regular milk or goat's milk.
Best wishes on your search for an answer.

My daughter was the same way, I just let her have it, do you give him some before he goes to bed? Or even a light snack might keep him full. We eventually got her from milk to water. She has been checked for diabetes and it was negative she is just a very thirsty kid, drinks almost a gallon of water a day, the doctor said some people's bodies just require more hydration. Hang in there eventually he will sleep through the night. I never thought I would pray for sleep until I became a mommy LOL

You didn't say how long he's been doing this, maybe he just learnt something new that is more exciting than sleeping.
My son used to do that and all I could do in the end was ignoring him. I know it sounds heartbreaking but maybe it's your only choice. I did that with Alex and it took him a couple of nights to understand that he had to go to sleep and that I would be more than happy to play with him in a few hours.
If you think he is really hungry try giving him more food before he goes to sleep, though he should be able to sleep through the night. I hope this helps

My daughter is almost 2 1/2 and still occasionally wakes up at night. Don't take away naps if he still needs them. Sleep deprivation can actually cause a child to wake up more at night.

Try to get him to skip that mid-morning nap and move his afternoon nap to around 1. By around 7:30 or 8, he should be good to sleep through the night.
