My best is to put in a three-way switch. One connection (red wire) from amplifier to one branch terminal of switch. One wire from other terminal of switch to speaker. One wire from another terminal of switch to a eight-ohm resister (make sure that handles enough power-watts) then to black wire.
Amplifier that is on not connected to the speakers is not good.

Electronics stores have "speaker switches" of various types including volume controls for speaker circuits. Nothing you have to "build." Just buy a switch or control, and connect it to your speaker.
