you're in college, it's your birthday, and you got a birthday card from a good friend who goes to a different school. do you typically tell him (either e-mail, phone, whatever) "thank you?" do most college folks?

It would be nice, but not required. Mention it casually next time you talk to them. "Hey, I got the card you sent.Thanks."

I don't think this necessarily has anything to do with whether you're in college or not...it is simply common courtesy to thank someone when they do something nice for you (especially since this is a good friend). If that person took the time to think of you and send you a birthday card, then it wouldn't hurt for you to take 5 seconds and say thank you whether via phone, email, in person, etc.

You're so lucky to have a friend who still takes time mailing you a card. Nowadays, people just send e-cards, you know. In my opinion, that person deserves a sincere "thank you" from you by phone or at least an e-mail to show your recognition of his thoughtfulness.

I call. It's as personal as you can get being in college and all. I don't have time to write a thank you note. But you must do something to say thank you, otherwise it's just rude.

yes, absolutely. there is no need to send a "thank you" card unless they put something in the card (money, scratch ticket...etc) but a thank you is in order by email or phone convo.

they were nice enough to remember and said something..they deserve a thank you....at least i would want one :)

I would send a quick email just saying thanks for the card so they know you got it. It does not have to be anything formal at all.
