I think you should use the soft approach first, explain to him why he shouldn't spend so much time on playing Maple Story (cause I watched a program whereby some celebrity adults (Xiao S/ Dee Hsu) discussed their childhood experience and they used to do certain things though their mother forbid them lots of times from doing so but after they analysed in depth, they realised its because their parents never ever explain to them the reason so they never know why its wrong but would only stop them and scold them),

explain to him the consequences then be reasonable and slowly cut down his playing time bit by bit cause you cant expect a 14 year old to be deprived of playing time totally (its like a cigarette addict without his cigar)

then maybe install an incentive like if he does well for his exam, he can go on the computer for another 2 hours,

he will feel more motivated to study and if he really have a major exam and hes still playing maple story instead of studying AT ALL,

maybe a last resort would be to install the new Window Vista's parental control (please see link below) which allows you to monitor your kid but I would advise you not to use that until you are at your wits end because as an adult, if you deprive your kid of freedom and privacy like totally, he or she would feel compelled and turn rebellious :(

Hope this helps and things work out between your kid and you! :)

Okay, what the hell is maple storey? I need to know!
As for playing any game for 9 hours, 14 year olds are going to do that, IF you let them.

Whoa. at the start, top has not something to do with age. An 11 year previous is nowhere close to the actual or emotional adulthood of a 14 year previous. maximum male 11 year olds have not reached puberty yet. this might nicely be a venture that should needless to say be perceived as sexual abuse, no count how plenty the 11 year previous might look consenting. In a notice, specific, this is undesirable. and you may desire to get as some distance removed from this occasion as conceivable formerly you finally end up with a juvenile intercourse criminal label you isn't waiting to be rid of.

Take the game away from him. You are the adult, the parental figure, be in control. If he gets mad at you, tough cookies...that's life. He'll get over it. You can also restrict his time with the game and give him an hour or two. You should be calling the shots, not a 14 yr. old. You need to be his parent first, friend second.

His spends 9 hours playing the game per day and you don't know how to stop him? He is only 14. All you have to do is control him and stop him.

unplug computer. take it away. hide it at SOMEONE ELSE'S HOUSE

ground him from using it and any other games.

tell all mothers/fathers of his friends that he is NOT allowed to use computer games at their homes either.

take him to the park, library, church events, out for a jog, join a karate class, sign up for baseball, etc.

we bought a kitchen timer so that when the alloted time rings off, the computer is off limits for the rest of the day for the child in question. it works, but you MUST be willing to be the parent and not let the child police themselves!

Good Luck!

Set up a schedule - limit his time to one hour for playing the game, and then tell him he has to do something else for one hour before he can come back and play it again. Like going outside and riding a bike or playing with other kids. One hour for what he wants to do and one hour for what you want him to do - fair exchange, or else take it away totally.
