If you are an American you need a working visa to work in Canada. If you are flying you need a valid passport to go anywhere for anything. You don't need a passport until next year for ground travel

You need a passport to fly to Canada this year, and beginning in 2008 to travel by land or sea. Passports are now taking a minimum of 10 weeks to get unless expedited for an additional huge fee. With expedited status it is still taking at least 4 weeks to get.

If you will be working in Canada, you will need a valid passport with a work visa. If you are just visiting, you do not need a passport if travelling by ground transportation but do need on if travelling by air.

You need a passport if you are flying. For the next year, you can drive into and out of Canada without one. However, you will need a work permit; and why hasn't your employer discussed this with you? You need to contact them and make sure all your papers are in order before leaving.

You now need a US passport to go to Canada for ANYTHING. I would think that in addition to the passport you'd need a work visa in Canada.
