I met with a plastic surgeon who has been in the business for 30 years, and he seemed really good. But after doing some reasearch I notived he wasn't a member of ABPS, should I find someone else instead?

Yes. Don't take a chance with someone who isn't certified to really perform surgery. I have heard of dentists who fancy themselves plastic surgeons, if he is board certified then it definitely means that he went to school for plastic surgery and that his doctorate isn't in something else.

Board certification is an independent examination by one's peers and serves as test of competence. It usually consists of a written exam, which is followed by an oral exam in certain specialties. Plastic surgery is one of those. During that portion, cases are reviewed and the doctor is tested by other plastic surgeons on his proficiency. There are plenty of good doctors who are not "boarded" for reasons known only to them (especially if one has been practicing as long as 30 years), but you are probably more likely to encounter a "bad doctor" if they are not board certified. In the Plastic Surgery business, find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon that has good references from patients (they will usually provide these to you) and from the community as a whole. You shouldn't take a chance with your life.

That is a tricky question. I personally would not want to go to someone who is not board certified because plastic surgery is expensive and it is serious surgery. Plastic surgery can be dangerous and I would not want to put my life in the hands of someone who is not certified. The only exception would be if I personally had a friend or family member that went to the surgeon and gave him an excellent reference and I was impressed with his work.

I hope that helps!

I wouldn't. Yeah he might be in business for 30 years and seem real good but he might have been lucky all those 30 years. You will not believe all the horror stories I've heard about people going to non-certified plastic surgeons. It even cost some people their lives.
Plus, because he is non-certified you don't know what's in his past. Just in case something bad happens to you there's no one you can turn to.

NOOOOOOO!!!! There has to be a reason he's not a certified specialist in plastic surgery. If he's been in business for that long and seems to have a reputable practice, call his office and ask why he's not certified... But most of the time, health professionals eagerly get any certification they are eligible to sit for.

The certification is a verification that he is skilled in his area of practice and has advanced knowledge, a way for patients to distinguish among doctors. Thoroughly check it out before you make your decision and best of luck!

Definitely. Being board certified means he has met the highest credentials in his field. By belonging to the board means he has to complete CEU's ( continuing ed) and stay current and up to date on new things and show proficiency in them. I have to wonder why a plastic surgeon would not be board certified.

i would definitely find someone who was board certified. just to be on the safe side, epecially it being some type of plastic surgery. and the plastic surgery doctors dont take any responsibility for things gone wrong nor mistakes that can happen. so i would keep searching.

Definitely. Board certification is more than a fancy piece of paper! Find a doctor that meets all the board requirements before undergoing ANY procedure. It's your BODY we're talking about here!
