I was planning on getting an African Gray or a Blue Macaw and I was wondering if it were possible? Also, let's say I got both birds, would they get along?

I don't think it's possible to train a bird to choose when to let out its poo. I used to own a red macaw and an amazon (two separate cages) and they got along just fine. you just need to make sure you give them equal attention because parrots can get jealous. When I would dedicate time to my amazon my macaw would start squawking very loud in demand for attention. You should get two cages and keep the cages close so that they can get to know each other and be comfortable with each other. then try letting them explore outside together and see how they interact.

Yes you can train them to go potty in a specific place (as long as they are flighted or can easily get to that place another way). The bigger the bird, the easier it is because they can hold it longer. A budgie poops about every 15 minutes, where as a bigger bird might only do it every 30 or 45 minutes.

My last cockatiel used to fly back to his cage to poop and rarely had an accident. He spoiled me in that regard, lol. I'm starting the process of teaching my baby now, but it takes time.

Basically what you want to do is use the term you want it to associate with going, during the times it goes. Then when you can tell he needs to go, bring them to the spot you choose (over there cage, a newspaper, or garbage can etc) and tell them, "go potty" or whatever term you're using. When they do it, praise them and give them a treat. Eventually they'll get the point that you want them to do it there.

I don't know about compatibility with Grays and Macaws, as I don't have either.

First question -- are you experienced in handling birds? Both birds you mentioned especially the Grey, can be difficult to live with for a novice bird fancier.

Secondly, IMO, those birds would do well together in one home but not in the same cage. Grey's (most birds for that matter) can be very territorial with their space (cage, toys, food) and I'd hate to see what a Macaw could do to the Grey should a fight ensues.

Lastly, yes! you can potty train your bird(s). See the link below.

Good luck!

Hey, I have an umbrella cockatoo. I taught him how to go potty in his cage just by simply reinforcing it. Every 10 mins when I would have him out I would put him in his cage and tell him "poopy". If he did it he got praised for it. If he just stood there and looked at me I would let him out after a couple mins. My bird always shakes his back tail feathers before he goes, so that is another indication as well. Just know that any kind of parrot need a ton of attention. They are like children and will become aggressive if the are not held often. As for putting the two species together, I would get both as babies and let them grow up around each other.
