I have used TripAdvisor quite often and have found it to be very useful and truthful. It is nice way to cut through all of the b.s. that some hotels/attractions use to attract their customers and instead rely on a variety of opinions of people who have already experienced it and can give a realistic view(of course you have to watch out for the occasional reviewer who loves/hates everything regardless of quality)

I balance Tripadvisor with reviews from places like Frommers and Travel + Leisure. I find that traveler reviews give you a different spin from professional reviews, but people tend to leave reviews where they are either very disappointed or very impressed, so the professional reviews give you more of the middle ground. If both the travels and the professionals tell you a place is great - then that's where you want to go!

Yes they are very good, they give you an Idea of any Problems you might come across. There is a GeneralFeeling or Athmosphere in any Country that you attune to after awhile being there. Trip Adviser Gives you an Idea before Hand of what to expect what to avoid are the Locals Helpful to Foreigners, will they try to shortchange you in the Shops. It tells you what the Culture is like. I personally find Lonely Planet is Best overall for Information especially on where to avoid if it is a Seedy Area ETC. But I read most of these Reviews before I travel to a Country.

Overall I like tripadvisor, but you have to take into account there are cronic whiners in this world who will never be happy. You have to learn to pick them out and ignore their advice. But yes, I look to tripadvisor, travelocity and citysearch for advice, as well as websites that have consumer reviews (again you have to be careful there too, places like shopcartusa is a front site that makes up their own reviews certain companies).

I guess my answer is they are good tools, but you do need to know how to use them. I think tripadvisor has saved me from staying in some dump hotels, it also found me some good ones.
