The directions should state on the package, since different types of rices cook in different amounts. Generally speaking, however, the basic rule is:
1 cup rice
2 cups water
1 tblsp butter (opt)
1/2 tsp salt
Bring all to boil, then put a lid on the pot, turn down to a simmer and let it cook for about 20-23 minutes. Don't peek, but when done, you will see little holes in the rice and no more liquid. Perfection every time! oh, and it makes about 3 cups of cooked rice.

I don't use the butter or oil when I cook rice. I believe it keeps it from sticking together so much, but I figure I don't need the calories. I use converted rice - I think Riceland calls it their "gold" rice, and it comes out perfect everytime. You do need to use a little more water with it, though. Uncle Ben's also sells a really good converted rice. To 1 cup rice (which makes about four servings), add 2-1/3 cup water. If you want a little more flavor, add a chicken bouleon cube or a tablespoon of butter, or substitute chicken broth for part of the water... Bring to a boil, put the lid on and turn the burner down to medium low. Cook for 20 minutes with the lid on - don't take it off - then set off the burner for 5 minutes before taking the lid off. There will be little holes in the rice that looked like you poked a straw into it. Fluff with a fork and serve. Perfect every time.

This is basics, there are many rice to choose from.
How To Cook Rice
Rinse the rice in water to get rid of excess starch.
For every cup of rice, add 1 1/2 cups water.
Bring the rice to boil, uncovered, at medium heat.
When boiling, turn the heat down to medium low.
Place the lid on the pot, keeping it tilted to allow steam to escape.
When you can see holes or "craters" in the rice, put the lid on tight.
Turn the heat to low.
Simmer for another 15 minutes.
Fluff up rice and serve.
Tips:
For best results, use long grain rice.
For a bit of variety, try one of the scented rices, such as jasmine. The amount of the water required and the cooking time will be less than for other types of long grain rice.

Okay everyone makes their rice a little differently but you should get the same results. Although the directions look very easy sometimes rice can be a tricky thing to cook.
Good Luck.
Turn stove on high
In a small pot add about 1 tablespoon of oil (I use vegetable but you can use corn or olive oil).
Then add 1 cup of rice (long grain white or basmati are my preferences).
Continually stir rice until some of the grains start to turn white.
Then add 2 cups of hot water (from the faucet).
Add salt
Leave on high till it starts to boil vigorously
Then cover the pot and turn to low (lowest setting)
Cook for 17 minutes.
Turn off stove and let the pot of rice sit for about 5 minutes before uncovering.
Now you’re done serve with whatever else you’re eating.

Always twice as much water as rice (1 cup rice/2 cups water, 2 cups rice/4 cups water). Put water and rice in pot and bring to boil on high heat. Reduce heat to low cover and simmer 20-25 minutes. Perfect rice every time.

It depends on what type and how you like the rice to be. Usually, 1 to 1 for white grains and 1 to 1.5 for brown rice (more water and longer cooking time. Cooking time about 20 to 30 mins for 1 cup of rice. if you use a rice cooker. Thanks!

I was told to make rice way back when,heres my method.Take the rice and wash it,slowly.Then add water slowly to the rice,put your thumb on the top of the rice and when the water gets to the knuckle on your thumb thats all you need.(add salt)Put on the stove to get it to boil.Then turn your rice on low,cover with lid and cook for about 15 mins.Take a look and you will see the rice nice and fluffy on top.Turn of and let sit 5 mins, before you serve.Happy cooking...

all these people on here are trying to teach you how to make nasty rice, here it is
remember when rice cooks it make more than it looks uncooked so
fill a pot with cold water about midway and add salt to water to your liking
put pot on stove for high flame
(1 cup of rice serves three)
after you do steps one and 2 take out the desired amount of rice and put into a large bowl
Add water to bowl to clean rice and pluck any dirty looking ones
when water come to a complete boil ad about 2tbsp of cooking oil to water then add ricethe water should only be about a quarter of an inch above rice so you need to take some water out if water is to high, (the key to good rice is the level of water that is in the pot) make sure that when you put in the rice that the water is barely over the top of the rice and you should get an all metal cooking spoon to cook rice
lower heat on stove to a medium low flame and cover with lid
let cook for about 15min
after time is up take lid off, if the water is dried out give a good stir to fluff then serve if there is still water leave it cook for like 5 more min till water is dry then serve
dont be ashamed if you cant cook rice, all these people on here said they can cook rice and they cant, I hpoe this is helpful, oh one more thing turn off flame
FYI if you dont add oil to rice it will come out starchy,

And put a blob of margarine / butter or oil in the water with it while it cooks. This will stop it sticking together.
If using the stovetop, gently blow on the foam it it looks like it's going to boil over and it won't.
It should be al dente when it is cooked properly. Meaning, try a bit and if you can bite through it easily but it doesn't melt in your mouth, then it's ready.
By the way, jasmine rice is the best all round rice.
