A CNC machine is a computer operated metal cutting and shaping machine. You enter in the specifications of the part to be made and set the machine to work. It can be used on many different metals. Some are more complicated than others. Naturally someone has to write the program to create the parts. But the operator only has to enter the size, metal and a few other details.

Computer numerical control machine.

There are different type of machines which in a way are mini robots. They will have some type of cutter and will move in a precise manner which is repeatable. They are used when you need a large quantity of a piece.

The machine can be used for one off parts but it gets pretty pricey. I have seen them set up and tied into electronic measuring system that will send a signal back to the machine to adjust for wear of the tool, to keep the parts in tolerance.
