I don't have a copy of the NEC but I'll take a stab at 4/0??

Bare aluminum type AA, 00 gauge is rated for 215 Amps.

0 gauge is rated for 185 Amps, that's about 1/2 the panel rating.

You really should consult the National Electric Code (2005 is the latest edition).

Without the table, rule of thumb for 3 ph. and 1 ph. systems. Halve the size of the largest conductor used.
