If my child were to disobey me and not repent, then they would have disregarded my authority over their life and would not respect any authority and would very likely become a criminal. So, I would have no problem executing my child to prevent them from committing a crime. A child with no respect for authority has no respect for the law, so what's to keep them from breaking it? They will very likely break it and harm someone else.
You assume that the issue is about faith, it isn't. The issue is obedience, do you obey or disobey God. If you obey God, then you get to heaven, if you disobey God, you're sinning and will suffer for your sins in hell.

You must look at it from God's point of view, not an athiests. To you, God is letting people suffer and die their entire life.
But if you're God, you extend your children the chance of living forever, they just have to live Godly lives during their 70 or 80 years. At 2 Corinthians 4:17 it describes lifes difficulties as "momentary and light". Why? Because when we receive rewards from God, everything that came prior will eventually be such a small part of our life. He doesn't enjoy seeing us suffer, but ask yourself, do parents shield their children from EVERYTHING? Some days kids have to work hard, and learn lessons. This helps them grow and develop. And while parents protect them as much as possible, they also must let them feel the effects of their actions. So too, God is letting us have some hard times, but with a promise of a reward that makes it all worthwhile.
Edit: My answer is a little off, I misread the question.
As for hell however, eternal torture is not a Biblical teaching, it was added to some christian religions later. However God, who is loving, does not torment his children eternally.

I think people are really only children of God when they get born again. Before that they belong to the fallen race of Adam, that is rebellious to God, we inherit that rebel disposition. Not realising that God is absolutely pure, and judges by His standards, people think of Him as an indulgent father. Actually it would not be possible to live in heaven with one's sinful nature.
If you just believe on Jesus though, all the atonement is done for you. A premium pass to heaven is provided. The best free gift in all eternity. You then have a new internal desire towards God and goodness, and if you achieve something of God's plan for yourself in this world, will be very well rewarded.
Before I was born again, in all honesty, even though my family was church going, I only spared a thought for God when in real trouble. Also although on the outside I was quite decent to others, I can say that I was very selfish inside, in the imaginations of my heart.
So we are not really children of God until born again, and there is a ready way out provided at great expense to the provider Christ, to be born again and forgiven. Just hear the message many times, and faith will come if you are seeking it.

The problem is not in the nature of God, the problem is in the nature of your mischaracterization of Christian Theology.
The question that you asked should be restated to something along the lines of "Under what if any circumstances is it reasonable for a just, holy, merciful and loving God to allow his childern to suffer the logical consequences of their willfull disobediance, willfull misconduct, spitting in the face of God, mocking and desecrating his name and his son, and rejecting his offer of reconciliation to the point of murdering his son?"
That is the fundamental issue of Christian Theology in terms of whether or not Heaven/Hell as a final destination is reasonable.

Christians will tell you no, they wouldn't allow their children to be tortured for not having respect for them, but that's only because they think of themselves as not as smart, perfect, loving and just as their deity is.
What a lovely opinion they have of "God".

The million dollar question: Will you go to Heaven? Here's a quick test. Have you ever told a lie, stolen anything, or used God's name in vain? Jesus said, "Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her has committed adultery already with her in his heart." Have you looked with lust? Will you be guilty on Judgment Day? If you have done those things God sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterer at heart. The Bible warns that if you are guilty you will end up in Hell. That's not God's will. He sent His Son to suffer and die on the cross for you. Jesus took your punishment upon Himself -"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." Then He rose from the dead and defeated death. Please, repent (turn from sin) today and trust in Jesus, and God will grant you everlasting life. Then read your Bible daily and obey it.

No, I wouldn't because I'd love my children.
I think you're trying to make a parallel between God and Jesus here. Jesus, being perfectly sinless, had ALL faith in His Father. Jesus didn't do anything wrong, and didn't deserve to die on that cross. But He did for us. He did so that we wouldn't have to endure hell.
