It depends on a few factors.
A teen starts out with a clean slate, but the insurance company has no idea how they are going to drive, and what kind of skill they have at keeping their car off of other cars/objects/people.
The parents driving record will usually dictate some of it - since children sometimes adopt their parents driving habits. Plus the child is going to most likely be on the parents insurance policy.
Some places will give you better rates for good grades (apparently a sign of a responsible teen). The most important thing for the teen is to keep from getting into wrecks, or getting tickets - since they will quickly jack up the rates.

It is very expensive, and more so if you are a young male under the age of 25. Statistics have shown the males in that age bracket tend to get more tickets, drive recklessly, and are more prone to getting in a wreck. If you have good grades, your parents can get a credit which reduces the premium. When I added my twins to my policy, it quadrupled. It didn't take long for them to have to pay their share of the insurance.

It depends on a number of things-- are you wanting full coverage or liability only? Did you take driver's ed? Do you have a good student discount? Are you on your own policy or your parents?
I paid $60 a month to be added to my parents policy w/a beater car.
