I really hope you can assist me with this issue. For the last three days, my 4 year old male cat's right eye seems to be watery. I've dabbed tissue on it just to see if there is any kind of discolored goop, but it isn't. Whew. I've examined the eye and it isn't red or puffy. It looks normal in shape and color as the left eye. I am wondering if it is just a slight allergy or if it could be something much worse. He is still playing, eating and going about his normal behavior. Nothing has changed.
I can't see his vet until Monday so I am wondering if there is anything I can buy over the counter for watery eyes OR should I just wait until I see the vet?

Thank you!

The most common causes of a watery eye in cats are an irritation, a looming uppper respiratory infection, and herpes virus.

If the watering continues beyond a day, you might consider taking him into the vet for your own peace of mind, since at that point it is unlikely to be irritation.

Most upper respiratory infections usually include sneezing and nasal discharge, either watery, or mucous that is discolored. This really does need the attention of a vet.

Herpes virus can't be cured, but the good news is that it's not terribly serious. Most cats who have this acquired it from their mother's or other cats they were raised with. They tend to have bouts of it after stress, such as a vet visit or being neutered, a new animal in the home, etc. One good tip if you suspect your cat has herpes, is to get some lysine powder capsules at the health food store. Just pure lysine. You can put one of these in a quart of water, and use that for their dish. It makes the water cloudy, but cats don't seem to mind. The lysine is believe to boost their immune system.

For general eye irritation, I buy liquid Polysporin antibiotic drops at the pharmacy, over the counter. One drop, twice a day will help flush out irritants and perhaps head off anything worse in the way of infection.

A scratched eye would be inflamed and the cat would be in distress, pawing at it, or being sensitive to touch. Allergies are not that common in cats, but they do happen.

Usually, this is a sign of a scratched eye. When the eye gets scratched, it can ulcerate. This can be seen by a vet putting a dye in the eye which will show the problem.
Eye scratches are painful for the cat.
Does your cat keep that eye closed a lot??? that is a sign.
If you go to a vet and it is an eye scratch, he will give you antibiotic ointment for the eye. I know vets are expensive, but if the cat is keeping the eye mostly closed, you should go.

Sounds like Feline Conjunctivitis (pink eye). Yes, cats can get it, too. Go to the vet, they'll give you about a week's worth of antibiotics that'll clear it right up. It should be noted that cats can have chronic pink eye, and that it will come and go pretty randomly for the rest of their lives.

He probably got a little scratch, a minor cold, or somthing non-life threatening. A good remedy is to make some Camamil tea, let it cool, soak a wash cloth in it, and clean around your cat's eye with it. Some of the tea will make it into the eye and work to start healing it.

If the problem persists for 7 days or more (from the beginning), then take him to a vet.

It may be an allergy or an eye infection developing on your cat. Just to be on the safe side go see a vet.

it is propablly either kennel cough (they can get watery eyes and/or runny noeses from that) or he may have just gotten something in his eye that is iritating it.....if he seems okay than he should be fine until monday.....but if the symtoms get worse or his eye gets red and puffy than you need to be concerned....
