Has anybody got married by them and if so how was it? How did everything go and how did you dress and did you get flowers and everything else?

I had something like that done - it can be as casual as you want (usually why people get this done) or even fancier. The JP type is pretty much just getting the person to marry you two, everything else is in your hands. I dressed in a nice but not over the top dress and he was in his military uniform - I didn't wear mine because that would have looked funny - plus, it would have been 2 uniforms touching, and that's illegal. So have fun with your day - get massages in the am, do the jp 10-15 min schpiel then have a small gathering, it's all up to you two, because the marriage will still be on paper and you always have the chance later to re-do it big.

Most of the weddings I've attended recently have been performed by a marriage commissioner, and have been just lovely! These officiants are ideal for couples who do not attend church, or are of different faiths. Most of these weddings were performed at the same location as the reception, so they were very convenient for everyone.

And yes the brides had gowns and flowers... they were real weddings just without the church :)

My best friend did and it went fine.
She just wore a simple but pretty dress she found from a department store and he wore a suit.
Our other friend who is crafty made her a silk flower arrangement and a viel.
They got married and then everyone went to lunch afterward and that was it. Simple and cheap because they didnt' have a lot of money. Then they just went up to Niagra Falls for a short honeymoon. (We live in Ohio so that is close.)

The ceremony can be just the same as any other . . .
And all the trappings (clothes, flowers, etc) can be the same
The 'officiant' (JP) is just a 'witness' to the ceremony, and certifies that certain criteria are met in creating a legal contract.
