I hear reading the dictionary will help your vocabulary, don't know if this is true as I see it as a really boring way to improve your vocabulary, but if anyone out there has done it before and benefited from it please let me and all the other curious people out there know....

Thanks

I really like subscribing to the word of the day email. If you were only going to do one I would recommend m-w.com because the words are more intermediate and useful. I also subscribe to oed.com word of the day and dictionary.com and while dictionary.com is ok, oed sucks, it has the most basic words and terribly simple definitions. m-w also gives you a little trivia and history of the word.

Reading a dictionary is a sure way to learn and be able to use new words. Also reading books will improve your vocabulary. That is if you are willing to make the effort to look up the words that you are not familiar with while reading.

Undoubtedly. I had the privilege of attending a school where there was a copy of the complete Oxford Dictionary in the library (it occupied an entire bookcase, I seem to remember) and it was very far from boring. I love dictionaries!

A dictionary ,I think is meant to be used not to be read like a novel.
Of course I can pick up a cook book ,and will I learn anything ?
No .You must chose the words to be learned (like ingredients for cooking) and then read the instructions on how to use them ,and their role in the language
(how to prepare them to create a meal) .
I hope the analogy is a good one.

I would say just read books and if you see a word that you're not familiar with, then look that word up. but some people find flashcards or a word-of-the-day type thing helpful. you dont have to go throught the dictionanary page by page.

Only if you have a good memory. The thing to do is take 2 words a day, write them with their meanings on a card and carry it with you. Look at it occasionally and memorise it.

Next day 2 more and you'll at zephyr in no time.
