A charlie horse is the clenching of your calf muscles, and it can be very painful. Strenuous exercise can do this, but anyone can experience a charlie horse, whether they exercise or not. Yes, lactic acid build-up it a certain element, but cramping can be caused by all sorts of reasons. Unless it happens often, there is no need to worry. Walking when you have one almost always helps, and stretching as well.

I find that if I drink a lot of water during the day, I don't get charlie horses at night. My father is the same way and the home health care nurse told him the same thing - drink water.

Massage your legs and stretch a little before you go to sleep. Also try to sleep with your legs a little straighter if you have them bent up tight. A little potassium in your diet like banana, apple cider vinegar, prune juice, grapefruit juice or fresh grapefruit with a little of the white part can help. The white part of fresh grapefruit has so much potassium that some people's doctors recommend that they use that daily instead of potassium pills! Make sure you brush your teeth after these before you go to bed they are bad for your teeth. Also plenty of water and not too much salt in your diet can help.

its a build up of lactic acid in your calves, which is a large muscle group. Lactic acid is a byproduct of exercises or general flexing of the muscle. Try eating a banana or yogurt and drink lots of water to flush it out of your system before bedtime. Good luck.

Try more potassium, it's supposed to help reduce cramping.
