I don't know all that much about the molestation allegations--apparently Cardinal Norberto Rivera was one of many in the Vatican hierarchy who protected Father Nicolas Aguilar Rivera, who is accused of molesting at least ninety children. Rather than deal with the problem, Cardinal Rivera simply sent the priest to the United States, where he is said to have abused more children. If Cardinal Rivera did this, he is an accessory, at least in my book, and should be tried for his crime.

As for the abortion matter, the Roman Catholic Church has the right to excommunicate whomever it wishes. I think it's an extremely shameless attempt to blackmail Mexican Catholics into voting the way the Roman Catholic Church wants them to, but it might actually wake up a few to the character of the faith to which they belong. Frankly, I don't think the tactic will work. As I understand it, about 90% of Mexicans consider themselves Roman Catholic, but polls show strong support for allowing abortion in many cases.

So this Rivera wants to excommunicate those who support abortion while he is under investigation for helping a US cleric accused of molesting children?

If he knew about the molestation allegations and wanted to help him, yes, he should be punished, and it certainly discredits him in his opinion about those who support abortion,
I guess molestation is ok.

i think there are bad people everywhere, even in clergy, which doesn't necessarily mean a religion is to blame for the behaviour of certain individuals.
It's up tp the authorities to present proof of his misdoings and follow the necessary steps to see that it doesn't happen again.
Self righteous people by the way, are in most cases people who are repressed and are only looking to do things that might make them feel better about themselves.
