My male doxie is going in for surgery tomorrow. He is going to be neutered. He also has one testicle that is not descended and will have to have more extensive surgery than normal. Has anyone else ever had this problem/type of surgery on their pet? Will they give him pain meds? He only weighs 6 lbs and is full grown. He is also blind. I feel that I may have a hard time with him following the surgery.

Surgery to remove a retained testicle is a bit more like a spay than a neuter, in that it is more invasive. So there will be sutures and -- very likely -- an injection of pain meds. They may send you home with some to cover the first couple of days post-surgery.

Overall, the procedure is pretty simple. He will likely be very quiet/mellow and not willing to move around too much post surgery -- the anesthesia plus the pain meds will have him doped up a bit. Other than that, they get over the surgery very quickly. You may have to restrict his exercise due to the sutures, but if he's blind, he may not be so rowdy anyway. :)

Make sure he doesn't pull the sutures out! Many dogs will try this once they're fully alert.

Good luck with your boy!

Hi ya, you don't have any thing to worry about. I dog had this problem and i have seen so many of this type of surgery and assisted vets with this. I can assure you that they are given pain medication. this happens in the pre medication and during the surgery. These medications last for approx 8 - 36 hours. The vet may give you pain medication to give a home but most patients don't require this. It does depend where the other testicle is. if it is the abdominal cavity then this is more invasive but still very safe. Your dog will be fine and pain free.
If you have any more questions feel free to e-mail me, good luck
