My and my girlfriend will be going camping in Wisconsin in April with her german sheperd, Caramel. Now it will get a little cold at night, but I don't want the dog in the tent with us (it's a small tent). Last year we hung up a tarp and put a blanket down so the dog can sleep out of the wind, and she was ok, if a little unhappy due to chilliness. I know German Shepherds are pretty tough, but is it mean to leave them out in the cold?

IT'S A DOG!!!!!!! If you can camp in a tent then I am sure it's warm enough for a dog to be outside. A tarp and blanket would make it a doggy club med. It's like asking if it's cruel to take your fish swimming.

Where are you from in Wisconsin? If you are near the Twin Cities or Madison, go to REI. (Those are the only two REI's I know of in the Wisconsin area, but if you know of more, by all means, patronize them.) REI sells an actual "pup tent," meaning a tent that is actually made specifically for dogs. It even comes with a rain fly and a zippered door. Just like your tent for humans, it will still be the same temparature as outside, but it will block the wind and rain from your dog. It's actually pretty cute - It's for your dog, but it looks just like a mini version of a tent for people.

Raise a pup-tent for the dog (no pun intended!) and give him a blanket and he can sleep there by himself. He will be out of the wind, out of the rain and warm as you will be in your tent! Just make sure you leave the flap open enough that he can get out if he wants...

Or, if you have an SUV you can take a "dogloo" with you (one of those domed doghouses) for him to sleep in. You can pack your gear in it when it's in the car ( =

It is definitely not nice to leave any animal outside in the cold when you can accomodate it and make it comfortable with little to no cost.

Good luck and have fun!!!

I think that's a little rough even for a tougher dog. Maybe leave the dog in the car if it's close by?

I wouldn't, but my dog sleeps with me at home and he knows where his rightful place is... lol
