Maybe get another one if it's not expensive. Or talk to the neighbors b/c they might now know about it.

If you purchased a good purifier it will do the trick, however you need a purifier with an ionizer which breaks down the particles. I used to smoke but was never a chain smoker and the purifier I got is fantastic....smells like rain in my house. Go to http://www.ecoquest.com they are a bit expensive but I have had mine 5 years and feel I got my monies worth.
You really cannot say anything to your neighbors without causing animosity. I used to be a courteous smoker and was respectful of non-smokers needs but I know some people who are horrible monsters even if you ask them not to blow their smoke directly into your face.
The right purifier will not only eliminate the smoke odor but will also control dander, bacteria, pollen, etc. from the air giving you a healthier environment. Second hand smoke is worse than smoking itself..I know as every time I get around smokers I am coughing like I was when I used to smoke.
I also agree that you could move to another apartment, but then again, your neighbors may be smokers as well. Good luck. The stale stench is awful and one reason why I quit!

Omigod! I have the exact same problem...my house is attached on one side. The folks next door are terrible smokers...the woman's not too bad, since she's at work most of the time, but the guy is a total chain-smoker. He's been on disability for over 25 years (cuz he's psycho!) & NEVER comes out of the house. The smoke seeps in to my home right thru the walls...ugh, it stinks. What's even more disturbing is that we're constantly worry that one day the guy might drop dead w/a cig in his hand while his wife's at work & we're all asleep and burn down the whole damn house...& mine cuz it's attached. Anyway, my clothes used to REEK from their smoking. Now, I leave my closet door open halfway & keep a window at least partially open in my bedroom almost all year round. There's nothing else you can do, really, except hope they drop dead w/o killing you in the process.

It is probably coming through the air vents and under your door. Unless the building is a no smoking building (not just the hallways and elevator), there is not much you can do.
Chances are that they are also smoking in the hallway.
Try blocking the air vents and place a towel against any crack at the base of the door and keep a window opened.
Save up to move to a non smoking building (if you can find one) some ads stipulate that the suites are non smoking.

well it is quite weired that ciggaratte smoke is coming through walls. Do you have any opening or gaps on your wall? Before you decide anything please search for the reason you get smoke carefully.
Anyway, if you think it is the smoke that make your room and clothes stink, you must complain about it to the landlord right away. I dont think it will make any sence by talking this matter with your neighbour. Bcoz they wont believe you and they might think why do we stop our smoking bcoz of you.
Anyway think before you act.

you must speak with your landlord. They aren't required to stop smoking for you. but your landlord is required to make your living quarters healthy and comfortable. They need to move you to another apartment near people who don't smoke.
I know this may sound like a lot to do, but I think it's the only solution since each resident has the right to do what they want short of disturbing the peace at night.
sorry you have to deal with that.

How can smoke come through walls?
You could politely explin to them and ask them to smoke outside. Take the purifier back to where you got it and demand your money back too.

Yikes! There's nothing you can do to make them stop smoking obviously. I don't know if opening a window to let in fresh air is an option? Otherwise, I'd say burn some candles. They have odor/smoke neutralizing ones you can burn.

Try speaking to your landlord and see if they can offer any suggestions or a solution to the problem. I would advise against speaking to the neighbors, they will more than likely get defensive about it.

Do you have anything like the Environmental Health Department in the USA (I assume you're in the USA)?
If so, complain to them.
