Seriously, I moved in to a town home 6 months ago and almost every night the guy next door either plays his stereo or Xbox loud enough that I hear it over my TV and it vibrates the pictures on my wall. I don't want to come across as a nasty new neighbor, but I just want them to turn it down a couple notches. Any suggestions?

I understand. I was once visiting, and the drums on Stereo used to Boom and vibrate. Shaking the whole place!

I suggest first you sort of be the "friendly neighbor". Bear with it for a while. Get to know him. The friendly 'Hi' s and a smile will work wonders. Once he establishes a rapport, he will take it well.

Then say you love music but the 'booms ' and 'vibrations' scare you or something... I am sure you get the idea.
Wish you best!

May I kindly state that this neighbor has already shown you that he is rude and does not care by blasting the stereo. He is already aware that it is loud... Please take my advice DO NOT APPROACH this neighbor yourself. You are both owners ( I am assuming) and you don't want to start a war ... trust me complaining to him will start a war. Also DO NOT COMPLAIN about him to other neighbors... in condo/townhouse complexes you have busy bodies that will tell him you are bitching and complaining about him.

Here's what you can do .... Make a complaint to the HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION. If that does not work call the police. If you have not made it known to him that you are unhappy with his noise he will not know who called the cops. Call each and every time he starts up the loud music. He will soon get the message that his neighbors will not stand for his loud music ....
Please don't start a war with this guy.... I own a condo and over the years I have seen a lot of things. I have NEVER seen complain directly solve the problem... It just usually makes enemies... Ps if he's a renter complain to his landlord. Good Luck and remember you are NOT WRONG to want peace and quiet in your home.

Sometimes the only thing that can be done is to be assertive, when I had that very same problem, I just went and told them to their face that I pay the same price for my flat as they do, and that I'm not paying that kind of money to listen to their music, when they continued to play their music loud, I c alled the police, if they are called three times in one night, then the people can be taken to court as a public nuisance, and forced by the court system to move. On the other hand, if they turn it down and then on another day play it loud, and continue to have behaviors like this it may need getting the other neighbors in the complex involved, when more than one person is calling the police to have them quiet the noise, it helps the court system to have all of these people finding it necessary to call the police, to make them move away.

Just go to the house, knock on the door, and explain to them that you would appreciate it if they would turn the stereo down. If they don't do anything about it, tell your other neighbors to go over and ask if they can turn it down. Also, Explain how it vibrates the pictures on the wall. That should get them to do something :)

I dont think there is any way to do this smooth. All you can go is go over there and ask them to turn it down...in a nice way. If you want to take the hands off way you can always do what my brother did. He had someone like that and put a porn on the tv and made it really loud...its not the best way to do things but it worked.

I'm a total softie, so I agree with Liu. I would bake brownies or something and just go over and introduce yourself as the new neighbor. Let them know if they ever need anything (a cup of sugar?) to stop on by. A few days later leave them a note and ask if they would mind turning the volume down, and remind them to stop by if they need anything.

Try asking first. Tell the guy that you have an early job and really have to get to bed early, and would he mind taking it down a few notches.

If that doesnt work, call the cops.

Not being in your situation it's easy to answer this...

Take the offensive. If he comes to know you as the dominant one, he'll have a little more leeway to your wishes.

Cops are trained to have an attitude and a chip on their shoulder when they approach strangers (as if I we all haven't noticed), that way they instantly stifle any sense of being the weaker one. You should try the same. Always be tactful at first, but don't let them push you around. Reason that it's not fair and you don't appreciate it.

Well, first off knock on their door and address them nicely (give them the benefit of the doubt at first). If they do not oblige call the police, get bitchy do what you have to do to get some quiet.

People like that don't understand tact. Just tell him to turn it down . Tell him 3 times. Nearly all towns have noise bylaws. Use that as the 4th notice and get official confirmation of it's service. If you ever have to take him to court over it you have proof of your alegations.
