I found these tiny bread-like doggie treats made for training. I've been using those with my pup for housebreaking and command training. She loves it.
If you work with your dog for a while, try saying (nicely!) the same command over and over, till they get the point. Like sit for example. Say sit a bunch of times, place your dog's butt on the floor and tell him "good boy!" and give him a treat. When he stands back up, you do it again, and again, till he gets the point, and doesn't need you forcing a sit out of him! He will relate the word "sit" to treats. Keep it positive (nice), wear a smile, and make sure you give him big hugs too, when you reward him, because some dogs are more affection-based rather than treat-based.
Good luck, and make it fun for him, and you! Have other household members try it too, so the dog doesn't think you're the only one who he has to listen to.

what kind of dog is it? some dogs are just naturally stubburn. you need to be consistent in training & only try to teach him one thing at a time. dogs learn quicker through rewards then through punishment so if he does what you ask give him a treat & praise him. once he starts doing it regularly for a treat give him praise more so then treats & slowly wean him off until he will do it on command without recieving anything. if he does not listen sternly tell him no & just ignore him for a little bit & try again.
if you still have a problem then go to obedience class. but i'd leave that to a last resort. many people are just out to get your money. i trained a dog when i was 9 years old & she turned out to be extremely well behaived & mannered. anyone can train a dog it just takes lots of patience.

Take a positive, reward-based class to learn how to teach your dog. Dogs do not speak English and cannot learn by being 'commanded', even when you shout at them. Dogs learn best by being rewarded for the good things that they do. The value of treats that you use and your timing when giving them to your dog have everything to do with how quickly your dog catches on to what you are working on getting him to do. Being patient and learning a little bit about how to teach dogs will help you a lot.

If he's a food monger (and how many dogs aren't) a Beggin' Strip in your hand will make him listen every time.
Break it up into little pieces and give them whenever he comes to you and minds.
Also read "Pack of Two" by Caroline Knapp. She was quite adverse to using treats to get the dog to mind. She came around by necessity.
Oh, and make sure the dog's not deaf. Seems an odd thing to say, but check anyway. :-D

Dogs learn from your body language and the emotions in your voice. If he is doing something you don't like, like barking just go over to him, look him in the eyes and give him a stern "Shhh" or "No". And make sure he knows that you are the domanate one. Remember to use one word commands, that helps them to associate that "Shh", "No" or what ever word you use means there being bad. Sometimes people tend to say the dogs name when he is bad and the dog soon thinks when you say his name he is doing something wrong. Good Luck!!!

You need to train him consistently. Dogs don't speak English. Enroll both of you in obediance class right away. The teacher can not only help train the dog, he or she can teach you how to train the dog correctly. Behavioral problems with dogs are never the dog's fault. They are the result of poor training. Watch "The Dog Whisperer" sometime on National Geographic Channel. You'll see what I mean.
